Kamakura to Enoshima: Enoden Direct (23 Minutes, ¥260), Monorail via Ofuna, or Walk the Coast (2026)

Updated 2026-10-17

The Enoden does this trip in one go: board at Kamakura, sit on the left, and 23 minutes later you are at Enoshima for ¥260 (child ¥130). The train is the direct route and the cheap route at the same time, so the question is not which way to go but whether to get off along the way, and whether the ¥800 Enoden 1-day pass beats paying ride by ride. There is also a second rail route through Ofuna on JR and the Shonan Monorail, which only makes sense for a few people, and a sea road you can walk for part of the way. Fares and minutes come from the Enoden, the Shonan Monorail and the Enoshima Aquarium, checked 2026-10-17. JR East's fare pages did not open for us, so the one JR fare on this page reads "at the gate".

Route map from Kamakura to Enoshima. Enoden, one train, 23 minutes, 260 yen adult and 130 yen child, stopping at Hase, Shichirigahama, Kamakura-Kokomae and Koshigoe. JR Yokosuka Line from Kamakura to Ofuna, fare at the gate, then the Shonan Monorail to Shonan-Enoshima, 14 minutes, 340 yen adult and 170 yen child; the Japan Rail Pass covers JR only. The aquarium is a 10-minute walk from Shonan-Enoshima. Third option: ride the Enoden to Kamakura-Kokomae and walk the sea road to Enoshima, a stretch the train covers in 4 minutes. Fares checked 2026-10-17.
Green is the Enoden, purple the monorail, dashed blue the JR line. The circled ticket is the one almost everyone should buy.

Three ways, side by side

Route Trains One-way adult fare Time on board
Enoden, direct Kamakura → Enoshima, no change ¥260 (child ¥130) 23 min
JR + Shonan Monorail Kamakura → Ofuna on the Yokosuka Line, change to the monorail → Shonan-Enoshima JR fare at the gate + ¥340 (child ¥170) 14 min on the monorail, plus the JR leg and the change
Enoden + walk Kamakura → Kamakura-Kokomae by Enoden, then on foot along the sea ¥260 (child ¥130) 19 min on the train, then the walk

The Enoden and the JR line leave from the same Kamakura station building, the Enoden from its own gates on the west side. If you came in on the Yokosuka Line, walk through the station and you are at the Enoden.

My rule is short: ride the Enoden out, and decide at Kamakura whether you want to stop at Hase for the Great Buddha first. The monorail is a ride I like, but from Kamakura it means a change at Ofuna and a second fare, and the Shonan Monorail guide already shows that it earns its place on the way from Tokyo, not on the way from Kamakura.

The Enoden: 23 minutes, nine stops, ¥260

The Enoden is a 10 km railway between Fujisawa and Kamakura with 15 stations, and Enoshima is the sixth from the Fujisawa end. From Kamakura the train stops at Wadazuka, Yuigahama, Hase, Gokurakuji, Inamuragasaki, Shichirigahama, Kamakura-Kokomae and Koshigoe before Enoshima. These are the stops people get off at, with the fare and minutes from Kamakura on the Enoden's own fare search:

Stop Why stop Fare from Kamakura Minutes from Kamakura
Hase Great Buddha, Hasedera ¥200 (child ¥100) 4
Inamuragasaki Cape with a view back to Enoshima ¥220 (child ¥110) 10
Shichirigahama Long beach, cafes along the road ¥260 (child ¥130) 16
Kamakura-Kokomae The level crossing by the sea ¥260 (child ¥130) 19
Enoshima Island, aquarium, Sea Candle ¥260 (child ¥130) 23

Two things to read off that table. First, the fare tops out at ¥260 from Shichirigahama onward, so a stop at Shichirigahama or Kamakura-Kokomae on a single ticket costs you a second ¥200 ride to Enoshima, not more. Second, the sea appears after Inamuragasaki: the train runs between houses from Kamakura to Gokurakuji, then comes out onto the coast and stays on it to Koshigoe, where it runs down the middle of the street. Sit on the left going toward Enoshima and the water is on your side.

The Enoden takes Suica, PASMO and the other national IC cards, so you can tap in at Kamakura and tap out at Enoshima without buying a ticket. Fujisawa, Enoshima, Hase and Kamakura are staffed all day; some of the small stations between them are not.

Is the ¥800 Enoden pass worth it between Kamakura and Enoshima?

The Noriorikun pass costs ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children and gives unlimited Enoden rides on the day you buy it. Against a ¥260 one-way fare it looks expensive, and for a straight Kamakura to Enoshima ride it is. The three day shapes below show where it turns.

Ticket table comparing single Enoden fares with the 800 yen Noriorikun pass for three day shapes from Kamakura. One way to Enoshima: 260 yen, singles cheaper by 540 yen (child 130 against 400). Hase stop, then Enoshima and back to Kamakura: 720 yen against 800, singles cheaper by 80 yen (child 360 against 400). Hase and Kamakura-Kokomae stops, then Enoshima and back: 880 yen against 800, the pass saves 80 yen (child 440 against 400, saves 40). The pass pays from the fourth ride.
Three rides and single tickets still win. The fourth ride is where the pass starts to pay.

So the pass pays from the fourth ride, and a day that stops at the Great Buddha, the crossing at Kamakura-Kokomae and the island, then returns to Kamakura for the JR train home, is exactly four rides. Buy it at Kamakura or Enoshima station, both of which sell it (Enoshima's station page lists Noriorikun sales among its facilities). The pass is valid on the day of issue only and covers Enoden trains, not the monorail or Odakyu. If you arrived from Shinjuku on the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass, every Enoden ride is already included and you need nothing else; the Enoden pass guide has every fare on the line, and the Enoshima and Kamakura calculator adds up your own stops.

JR plus the Shonan Monorail: who should go via Ofuna

From Kamakura, ride the JR Yokosuka Line one or two stops to Ofuna (Kita-Kamakura is in between), then take the Shonan Monorail from the same station complex to Shonan-Enoshima: 8 stations, 14 minutes, ¥340 adult and ¥170 child after the operator's March 2026 fare change. The monorail's English map still prints the old ¥310; the fare table is the one to trust. From Shonan-Enoshima the Enoshima Aquarium is a 10-minute walk and the Sea Candle at the top of the island about 26 minutes, both figures from the attractions themselves.

This route is for three kinds of traveller:

For everyone else, it is a change of trains and a second fare to arrive at a station that is a short walk from the Enoden's.

Can you walk from Kamakura to Enoshima?

Part of it, yes, and the part worth walking is the coast. Neither the Enoden nor the city publishes a walking distance for the whole way, so I will not print one. What the Enoden does publish is the minutes between stops, and that gives you a plan: ride from Kamakura to Kamakura-Kokomae (19 minutes, ¥260), cross the famous level crossing, then follow the road along the sea through Koshigoe to Enoshima. The train covers that last stretch in 4 minutes, with Koshigoe the only stop between, so on foot it is a long but flat stroll rather than a hike. Start the walk at Shichirigahama instead (16 minutes, ¥260) if you want more beach; the train needs 7 minutes from there to Enoshima.

Walking from Kamakura station itself means a stretch through town before the sea, and most people who try it give up at Hase and get on the train. Cyclists: the Enoden carries bicycles free of charge if they are dismantled or folded and put in a bag, and staff can refuse them on a crowded train.

Arriving: three Enoshima stations, one island

Enoshima has three stations run by three companies, and none of them is on the island itself.

Once on the island, the escalators, the Sea Candle and the Iwaya caves each charge entry; the Enoshima island tickets calculator prices your group, and the Enoshima day trip guide walks the island in order.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay for the Enoden with a Suica or PASMO card?

Yes. The Enoden accepts Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and the other transport IC cards on its trains and its buses, so you can tap through the Kamakura gate and tap out at Enoshima. The Noriorikun pass is a paper ticket, not something loaded onto a card.

Does the Japan Rail Pass cover the Enoden or the Shonan Monorail?

No. The Enoden and the Shonan Monorail are private railways; the monorail's FAQ states that the Japan Rail Pass is limited to JR lines. The pass covers the JR Yokosuka Line between Kamakura, Kita-Kamakura and Ofuna.

What is the last monorail back from Shonan-Enoshima?

The last Shonan Monorail leaves Shonan-Enoshima at 23:26 and the first at 5:25, from the operator's FAQ. Check the Enoden's station timetables for the last Enoden train, which the company publishes per station.

Can I take a bicycle on the Enoden?

Only if it is dismantled or folded and carried in a bag, in which case there is no charge. Staff may refuse bicycles when the train is crowded, which on a sunny weekend it usually is.
