Hakone Luggage: Storage, Lockers and the Hotel Delivery Service (2026 Prices and Times)
Short answer: do not take a big suitcase around the Hakone loop. If you stay a night in Hakone, use the Hakone Luggage Transport Service inside Hakone-Yumoto Station: drop your bag 8:30–12:00 and it is at your hotel after 15:00, for ¥1,500 per regular bag or ¥2,500 per large bag, one way. On a day trip, leave the bag in Tokyo, or at the staffed storage counter at Shinjuku West, Odawara or Hakone-Yumoto (up to 160 cm and 25 kg). Prices and times from the official Hakone Tozan Bus and Odakyu pages, checked 2026-10-10.
Which option fits your trip?
| Your plan | Best option | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Day trip from Tokyo, back the same night | Leave the bag at your Tokyo hotel. No hotel? Odakyu storage at Shinjuku West (pick up by 19:00) | storage: ask the counter |
| One night in Hakone, arriving by train | Hakone Luggage Transport Service: station → hotel, then hotel → station | ¥1,500 or ¥2,500 per bag, each way |
| Passing through Hakone on the way to Kyoto or Osaka | Storage at Odawara (pick up by 16:30) or Hakone-Yumoto (by 18:00), or a coin locker | storage: ask the counter |
| Moving from one Hakone hotel to another | Yamato Transport (hotel → hotel): hand the bag to your first hotel by 12:00, it reaches the next hotel from 18:00 | ask the hotel |
Why bother? The classic loop is six rides in a row: train, cable car, ropeway, boat, bus and train again (see our Hakone day trip itinerary). You carry the bag at every change. Hakone's own tourism site says it is "hard to move around with luggage" and points visitors to these services.
Hakone Luggage Transport Service (station ↔ hotel)
Run by Hakone Tozan Bus. The counter is inside Hakone-Yumoto Station. Odakyu calls the same service "Hakone Baggage Delivery Service".
| Hand over | Collect | |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival day (station → hotel) | Hakone-Yumoto Station counter, 8:30–12:00 on the same day | at your hotel, after 15:00 |
| Leaving day (hotel → station) | your hotel's front desk, by 10:00 | Hakone-Yumoto Station, 13:30–18:30 |
| Bag size (per piece, one way) | Price |
|---|---|
| Regular: length + height + width up to 140 cm, 15 kg or less | ¥1,500 |
| Large: up to 200 cm, 30 kg or less | ¥2,500 |
What to know before you go:
- Partner hotels only. Check that your hotel is on the official list of partner facilities first (link in the sources below).
- Book online to skip the queue. Online booking takes a credit card and works for station → hotel only. For a same-day online booking, finish by 11:30 and bring the bag to the "Online Reservation" window by 12:00.
- The return trip is booked at your hotel, at the front desk by 10:00. It cannot be booked online.
- Not accepted: bags over 2 m in total or over 30 kg, valuables, precision equipment, power banks, fragile items, full-size umbrellas, strollers, unpacked bottles or cans, and several items packed together into one box or big bag. No compensation for data loss or damage to laptops and tablets, so keep them with you.
- Early January and bad weather: the service may not reach some hotels around Lake Ashi in early January because of traffic, and typhoons or snow can stop it.
Example: two people, two large suitcases, one night: 2 × ¥2,500 in, plus 2 × ¥2,500 out = ¥10,000. With regular-size bags it would be ¥6,000.
Staffed storage at Odakyu Sightseeing Service Centers
Good for a day trip, or for a night in Hakone when you only need a small bag. Odakyu stores suitcases and souvenirs at three counters:
| Counter | Drop off | Pick up by |
|---|---|---|
| Shinjuku West (Odakyu Shinjuku Station B1, West Underground Exit) | 8:00–16:00 | 19:00 |
| Odawara Station (across from the Odakyu ticket machines) | 8:30–16:00 | 16:30 |
| Hakone-Yumoto Station | 9:00–17:30 | 18:00 |
- Up to 160 cm (length + height + width) and 25 kg per bag.
- You can keep a bag for up to 3 days. Collecting after closing time costs extra for each additional day.
- Price: Odakyu says prices vary by counter and does not publish them online, so we do not guess. Ask when you drop off.
Tip: the Shinjuku West counter closes for pick-up at 19:00. If your train back from Hakone reaches Shinjuku later than that, leave the bag at your Tokyo hotel instead.
Coin lockers
Hakone-Yumoto Station has coin-operated lockers, and Hakone's tourism site says there are lockers "in various locations throughout Hakone". Locker sizes, prices and payment methods differ, so check them on the spot. Large suitcase lockers fill up early on busy days; the staffed counters are the backup.
Going on to Kyoto or Osaka with a big suitcase
Many visitors do Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto. From Odawara you can take the Tokaido Shinkansen. JR Central's rule:
- Bags with length + height + width of 161–250 cm need a seat with an oversized baggage area, booked in advance. The seat costs the same as a normal reserved seat.
- Board with such a bag without that booking and you pay a ¥1,000 fee.
- Bags over 250 cm cannot be taken on board.
Measure your suitcase before you book. If you are coming from Shinjuku, the Romancecar has luggage space too; see Hakone Romancecar tickets.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Hakone luggage delivery?
The Hakone Luggage Transport Service costs ¥1,500 per regular bag (up to 140 cm and 15 kg) and ¥2,500 per large bag (up to 200 cm and 30 kg), per piece, one way. It runs between Hakone-Yumoto Station and partner hotels in the Hakone area (official price, checked 2026-10-10).
What time do I need to drop off luggage at Hakone-Yumoto Station?
Between 8:30 and 12:00 on the day. Your bag is at your hotel after 15:00. On the way back, hand it to your hotel's front desk by 10:00 and collect it at Hakone-Yumoto Station between 13:30 and 18:30.
Where can I store luggage in Hakone for a day trip?
At the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center in Hakone-Yumoto Station (drop off 9:00–17:30, pick up by 18:00) or in coin lockers at the station. If you start from Shinjuku, the Shinjuku West counter (drop off 8:00–16:00, pick up by 19:00) lets you leave the bag before you go.
Can I take a suitcase on the Hakone ropeway and pirate ship?
The official pages we checked do not set a suitcase ban, but the loop is six rides in a row (train, cable car, ropeway, boat, bus, train) and you carry the bag at every change. That is why Hakone's tourism site recommends a delivery service or a locker instead.
Does the Hakone Freepass include luggage delivery?
No. The Freepass covers the rides. Luggage delivery and storage are paid separately.
