Hakone to Kamakura by Train: Route, Time, Cost and Which Pass Covers It (2026)

Updated 2026-10-23

Three trains, two changes, and you are in Kamakura about 1 hour 15 minutes after leaving Hakone-Yumoto. Ride the Hakone Tozan Train down to Odawara (15 minutes, ¥360), take any JR Tokaido Line train toward Tokyo as far as Ofuna (39 minutes on a local train), and change there to the Yokosuka Line, which reaches Kita-Kamakura in 3 minutes and Kamakura in 6. No train runs the whole way, and I found no bus that does either. The Odakyu route through Fujisawa and the Enoden is the other option: slower, about 2 hours, but free with the Hakone Kamakura Pass. Every minute on this page comes from the operators' own timetable sites for a weekday, and every fare from their fare pages, checked 2026-10-23. JR East's fare pages blocked us again, so the one number missing is the JR fare: tap an IC card and pay at the gate.

Route map from Hakone-Yumoto to Kamakura. Main route: Hakone Tozan Train from Hakone-Yumoto to Odawara, 15 minutes, 360 yen; JR Tokaido Line from Odawara through Fujisawa to Ofuna, 39 minutes on a local train or 24 minutes on the Shonan-Shinjuku Line Special Rapid, fare paid at the gate; JR Yokosuka Line from Ofuna to Kita-Kamakura in 3 minutes and Kamakura in 6 minutes. Odakyu route: Romancecar from Hakone-Yumoto to Sagami-Ono about 60 minutes, rapid express to Fujisawa about 20 minutes, Enoden from Fujisawa through Enoshima and Hase to Kamakura 34 minutes, 310 yen, covered by the Hakone Kamakura Pass. Ofuna is circled as the place to change.
Solid red and dashed blue is the fast way. The green Odakyu and Enoden loop is the Hakone Kamakura Pass way.

The route, leg by leg

Leg Train Minutes Adult fare
Hakone-Yumoto → Odawara Hakone Tozan Train (local) 15 ¥360
Odawara → Ofuna JR Tokaido Line, any train toward Yokohama and Tokyo 39 (local), 24 (Special Rapid) at the gate, IC card
Ofuna → Kamakura JR Yokosuka Line toward Zushi or Kurihama 6 (Kita-Kamakura after 3) included in the JR fare from Odawara

At Odawara the Tozan Train and the JR lines are in the same station, so follow the signs for JR and the Tokaido Line. Every Tokaido Line train on the Tokyo side stops at Ofuna. At Ofuna the Yokosuka Line platforms are a short walk inside the gates: you do not tap out, you just change trains. The Yokosuka Line leaves Ofuna about every 10 minutes through the late morning, so there is no timetable to plan around.

If you are staying higher up in Hakone, add the ride down to Hakone-Yumoto first: the Hakone Tozan Railway guide has the minutes from Gora, and the Hakone bus guide covers the lake side.

Two real connections from the timetable

Here is what the official timetables show for a weekday morning. Times are for the timetable in force in October and November 2026.

My reading of the numbers: from your Hakone-Yumoto platform to Kamakura Station you need 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on the wait at Odawara. Leave Hakone by 10:00 and you are at the Great Buddha before noon.

Which pass covers which leg

Ticket table of what you still pay on the way from Hakone-Yumoto to Kamakura with each pass. No pass: 360 yen for the Tozan Train, the JR fare at the gate, and 200 yen for the Enoden from Kamakura to Hase. Hakone Freepass: the Tozan Train is covered, the JR fare and the Enoden are not. Hakone Kamakura Pass, 8,520 yen for 3 days: the Tozan Train, the Odakyu route via Sagami-Ono and Fujisawa, and every Enoden ride are covered, the JR route is not. Japan Rail Pass: the JR legs are covered, the Tozan Train 360 yen and the Enoden are not. The Hakone Kamakura Pass row is circled as the only pass that covers the whole way, on the Odakyu route.
Only the Hakone Kamakura Pass covers the whole trip, and only on the Odakyu route. Everyone else pays JR at the gate.
You hold Hakone-Yumoto → Odawara Odawara → Kamakura Enoden in Kamakura
Nothing ¥360 JR fare at the gate ¥200 to Hase, ¥310 to Fujisawa
Hakone Freepass covered JR fare at the gate pay per ride
Hakone Kamakura Pass (¥8,520, 3 days) covered covered on the Odakyu route via Fujisawa; JR not covered covered
Japan Rail Pass ¥360 covered pay per ride

The Hakone Freepass includes the Tozan Train, and the Shinjuku version includes one Odakyu round trip between your start station and Odawara. Neither helps on JR or the Enoden. So a Freepass holder heading to Kamakura rides free to Odawara, then pays JR from there.

The Hakone Kamakura Pass changes the route, not just the price. It covers all Odakyu lines and the Enoden, so its free way to Kamakura is Hakone-Yumoto → Sagami-Ono → Fujisawa → Enoden → Kamakura. Odakyu's own blog gives about an hour by Romancecar from Hakone-Yumoto to Sagami-Ono (the Romancecar seat is extra), about 20 minutes by rapid express from Sagami-Ono to Fujisawa, then 34 minutes on the Enoden. Roughly 2 hours against 1 hour 15 by JR. Whether the pass pays off over your 3 days is a sum, and the Hakone Kamakura Pass calculator does it.

Japan Rail Pass holders have the mirror image: JR from Odawara is free, the ¥360 Tozan ride and the Enoden are not. For the Enoden, the ¥800 Noriorikun day pass is worth it from the fourth ride; the Enoden pass guide has the break-even.

Hakone and Kamakura in one day?

Only if you leave Hakone early. The Great Buddha closes at 17:30 in summer and 17:00 from October to March, Hasedera at 16:30 or 17:00 by season, and the Hakone Ropeway stops at 17:00. Arrive in Kamakura by noon and you have the afternoon for Hase and the Enoden; arrive at three and you will see one temple. The Hakone or Kamakura guide sets the two days side by side if you are still choosing, and the Kamakura day trip itinerary is the afternoon plan once you arrive.

Kamakura to Hakone, the other way

Same trains in reverse: Yokosuka Line to Ofuna, Tokaido Line toward Odawara and Atami, Tozan Train up to Hakone-Yumoto. From Kamakura the Yokosuka Line runs toward Tokyo, so at Ofuna you change to a train going the opposite way, toward Odawara. Buy the Hakone Freepass at Odawara (¥6,000 for 2 days, ¥6,400 for 3 days) before you board the Tozan Train if you plan to ride the loop; the Hakone Freepass calculator checks whether it pays.

Luggage

Both changes are quick, but a suitcase on the Tozan Train and across the Odawara concourse is no fun. The Hakone luggage storage and delivery guide covers lockers at Hakone-Yumoto and same-day delivery to Tokyo hotels, which is the clean answer if you move hotels on the same day you visit Kamakura.
