Updated 2026-10-10

Short answer: if you only have one day and want to keep costs low, go to Kamakura and Enoshima: the trains from Shinjuku cost ¥1,640 per adult with the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass. Go to Hakone for the mountain loop (train, cable car, ropeway, lake cruise and bus): it costs ¥7,100 per adult with the Hakone Freepass, ¥5,460 more. If you can do both within 3 days in a row, the Hakone Kamakura Pass (¥8,520) covers both. Official Odakyu fares, checked 2026-10-08 and 2026-10-10.

How to choose in 3 questions

Decision chart. 1: Doing both areas within 3 days in a row? Yes: Hakone Kamakura Pass, ¥8,520. No: 2: Want to keep train costs under about ¥3,000? Yes: Kamakura and Enoshima, ¥1,640 Freepass. No: 3: Strong wind or a storm forecast, or the Hakone Ropeway is stopped? Yes: Kamakura and Enoshima that day. No: Hakone loop, ¥7,100 Hakone Freepass.
Check the Hakone operating status on the morning of your trip before you decide.

Can I do both in one day?

We do not recommend it. Both trips start from Shinjuku on Odakyu, but Hakone and Kamakura are in different directions. Odakyu gives about 60 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto to Sagami-Ono by Romancecar and about 20 minutes from Sagami-Ono to Fujisawa, before the Enoden to Kamakura. With the Ropeway closing at 17:00 and the Kamakura temples closing between 16:00 and 17:30, you would rush both. Split them over two days with the Hakone Kamakura Pass instead.
