Hakone Ropeway Tickets: Price, Hours, Owakudani Stop and Which Ticket to Buy (2026)
Short answer: the Hakone Ropeway runs from Sounzan over Owakudani and Ubako down to Togendai on Lake Ashi. The fare is flat: any one-way ride costs ¥2,000 for adults and ¥700 for children (6–11), and you may get off at Owakudani and ride on later the same day on the same ticket. A round trip is ¥3,000 (child ¥1,000) and is valid for 2 days. Boarding hours are 9:00–17:00 from February to November and 9:00–16:15 in December and January. The Hakone Freepass covers the ropeway. Prices from Hakone Navi, the official site of the Odakyu Hakone group, checked 2026-10-10.
Ticket prices (from 1 October 2025)
| Ticket | Adult | Child (6–11) | Valid |
|---|---|---|---|
| One way, any section (e.g. Sounzan → Owakudani, or Sounzan → Togendai) | ¥2,000 | ¥700 | day of purchase, stopover OK |
| Round trip | ¥3,000 | ¥1,000 | 2 days |
- The fare is the same for every section. Sounzan → Owakudani costs the same as Sounzan → Togendai. So if you are going on to Lake Ashi, buy one ticket to Togendai and get off at Owakudani on the way.
- Where to buy: the ticket counters at all four stations (Sounzan, Owakudani, Ubako, Togendai), or online as a digital QR ticket on Odakyu's EMot site.
- Payment: credit cards (JCB, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay and others) are accepted. Suica and PASMO are accepted at the ticket office only; you cannot tap an IC card at the gate.
- The old prices (¥1,500 one way, ¥2,500 round trip) ended on 30 September 2025. Older blogs still show them.
Which ticket should you buy?
| Your plan | Best ticket | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Hakone loop from Tokyo (train, cable car, ropeway, boat, bus) | Hakone Freepass | ¥7,100 from Shinjuku (2 days) | ¥1,600 |
| Train to Owakudani and back the same way, no boat | Owakudani 2-Day Pass | ¥6,480 from Shinjuku, ¥5,000 from Odawara | ¥1,400 / ¥1,300 |
| Ropeway one way only (e.g. you came by bus) | Single ticket | ¥2,000 | ¥700 |
| Ropeway and pirate ship, both ways (e.g. you parked at Lake Ashi) | Pirate ship + ropeway 1-day pass | ¥5,000 | ¥1,400 |
Owakudani 2-Day Pass vs Hakone Freepass. Both include the Odakyu round trip from Shinjuku, the Tozan Train, the cable car and the whole ropeway (Sounzan–Togendai) for 2 days. The Owakudani pass is ¥620 cheaper from Shinjuku (¥6,480 vs ¥7,100) and ¥1,000 cheaper from Odawara (¥5,000 vs ¥6,000), but it does not include the pirate ship or the Hakone Tozan buses. The boat alone is ¥1,700 one way, so if you plan to cross Lake Ashi and take the bus back, the Freepass is the better deal. If you go up to Owakudani and come back down the same way, the Owakudani pass is cheaper. It also gives free entry to Hakone Gora Park.

Stations and ride times
- Sounzan: the top of the Hakone Tozan Cable Car from Gora. The ropeway starts here.
- Owakudani: about 15 minutes from Sounzan. If you ride the whole line, you change gondolas here.
- Ubako: about 15 minutes from Owakudani.
- Togendai: about 15 minutes from Ubako, on Lake Ashi. The pirate ship port is a 3-minute walk.
Gondolas carry up to 18 people and leave about every minute, so you do not need a reservation (groups can reserve, but they get no priority boarding). Sounzan to Togendai is three sections of about 15 minutes, so allow 30–45 minutes including the change at Owakudani (Odakyu's own guide says about 30 minutes for the whole line). Mt. Fuji can be seen between Owakudani and Ubako, and about halfway between Sounzan and Owakudani, on a clear day. Between Sounzan and Owakudani the gondola passes about 130 m above the valley floor. The operator says mornings are best for Fuji in summer, when clouds build up during the day.
When the ropeway stops
The ropeway stops in wind of 30 m/s or more, in very bad weather, for mechanical trouble and for its yearly inspection. Check the official status page on the morning of your trip.
Planned closures for inspection work (replacement buses run, and ropeway tickets and the Freepass are valid on them):
| Section closed | Dates | Replacement bus |
|---|---|---|
| Owakudani – Sounzan | 7–24 December 2026 | about 10 min |
| Togendai – Ubako – Owakudani | 12 January – 26 February 2027 | about 15 min |
Also note the last connections: from February to November the last ropeway boarding is 17:00, and the last cable car from Sounzan down to Gora leaves at 17:55. See the Hakone day trip itinerary for the whole day in order.
At Owakudani: black eggs, the nature trail and safety
Black eggs (kuro-tamago). Eggs boiled in the hot spring ponds turn black. They are sold at Owakudani Kurotamagokan for ¥500 for a pack of 4 (tax included). Egg sales run 9:00–16:40 (the shop 9:00–16:30); hours change with the season and the eggs can sell out. The shop says eggs are currently not sold at the Gokurakuchaya stand inside the nature trail.
Owakudani Nature Trail (guided only). The 700 m trail up to the steaming vents is open again, but only on a guided walk:
- 4 walks a day, 30 people each, about 40 minutes.
- Book in advance on the official website. You pay a ¥800 per-person safety contribution at the desk on the day.
- Children must be at least elementary school age and able to run to safety on their own. You wear a helmet they lend you.
- People with breathing or heart conditions cannot join. Walks are cancelled when volcanic gas is above the safety level, or in rain, strong wind or fog.
Volcanic gas. Owakudani gives off hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide. The operator warns that people with asthma, breathing problems or heart problems, and anyone feeling unwell, should take special care. If the smell is strong or your eyes, nose or throat sting, leave the area.
Other things at Owakudani station: OWAKUDANI KITCHEN restaurant on the second floor, a shop and café, coin lockers, an elevator and a first-aid room. Bring a warm layer in spring and autumn; in winter it can drop below freezing.
Practical tips
- Big suitcases: you can leave bags in the coin lockers or at the station office at every station (the operator lists ¥500). For hotel delivery, see our Hakone luggage guide.
- Wheelchairs can board without leaving the chair, and free wheelchair loans are available.
- Pets must be in a closed carrier or cage (cage rental ¥100). Service dogs are welcome.
- Taxis wait only at Togendai.
- By car: Owakudani's car park fills up on holidays and in the autumn leaves season. The operator suggests parking at Ubako (about 90 spaces, free), Sounzan (about 105, paid) or Togendai (about 40, paid) and riding the ropeway in.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the Hakone Ropeway?
¥2,000 one way for adults and ¥700 for children aged 6–11, whatever the distance. A round trip is ¥3,000 for adults and ¥1,000 for children, valid for 2 days (official prices from 1 October 2025, checked 2026-10-10).
Can I get off at Owakudani and continue to Togendai on the same ticket?
Yes. A one-way ticket allows a stopover on the day you buy it, and the fare is the same for every section, so buy a ticket to Togendai and get off at Owakudani on the way.
What are the Hakone Ropeway hours?
Boarding is 9:00–17:00 from February to November and 9:00–16:15 in December and January. Gondolas leave about every minute.
Is the Hakone Ropeway included in the Hakone Freepass?
Yes, the whole line from Sounzan to Togendai. The Owakudani 2-Day Pass and the pirate ship + ropeway 1-day pass also include it.
How long is the Hakone Ropeway ride?
Hakone Navi gives about 15 minutes for each of the three sections, and Odakyu's guide says about 30 minutes for the whole line, so allow 30–45 minutes from Sounzan to Togendai, including the gondola change at Owakudani.
How much are the black eggs at Owakudani?
¥500 for a pack of 4 at Owakudani Kurotamagokan (tax included). They are sold from 9:00 to 16:40, but hours change by season and they can sell out.
Can I walk the Owakudani Nature Trail?
Only on a guided walk that you book in advance on the official website: 4 walks a day of about 40 minutes, up to 30 people each, with an ¥800 per-person contribution paid on the day. Children must be at least elementary school age, and people with breathing or heart conditions cannot join.
