Short answer: the train for a Yokohama day trip costs ¥1,080 per adult from Shibuya (Tokyu round trip ¥620 + Minatomirai Line 1-day ticket ¥460) or ¥1,160 from Shinagawa by JR. From our own visit

Our favourite spot in Yokohama is Osanbashi Pier. Go up to the rooftop deck and you can sit and take in the view of the harbour and the city at your own pace. Walk on from there and you reach Chinatown and the Motomachi shopping street, where just strolling around is fun.

If you like aloha shirts, visit MaunaKea Galleries near JR Kannai Station. There are so many great shirts that you will want all of them.

And look out for the Yokohama Grand InterContinental Hotel by the water. It is shaped like a slice of watermelon. My wife says it is a melon. It is a watermelon.

A typical day, worked out

Rides: Yokohama → Minatomirai (¥200) → Motomachi-Chukagai (¥200) → back to Yokohama (¥230) = ¥630 in single tickets, against ¥460 for the 1-day ticket.

How much does a day trip to Yokohama from Tokyo cost?

For trains, per adult: ¥1,080 from Shibuya (Tokyu round trip ¥620 + Minatomirai Line 1-day ticket ¥460), ¥1,160 from Shinagawa by JR (¥700 + ¥460), and ¥1,340 from Shibuya by JR. Food and entry tickets are extra.

Is the Minatomirai Line 1-day ticket worth it?

Yes if you take 3 or more rides on the Minatomirai Line. One ride costs ¥200 or ¥230, so 2 rides cost ¥400 to ¥460 and the ¥460 ticket saves nothing. With 3 rides you save ¥140 to ¥230.

Is the Tokyu Line & Minatomirai Line 1-day pass worth it from Shibuya?

Only if you make extra stops on Tokyu lines. The pass is ¥1,220, while the Tokyu round trip (¥620) plus the Minatomirai 1-day ticket (¥460) is ¥1,080. Extra Tokyu rides worth more than ¥140 make the pass cheaper.

JR Yokohama & Minatomirai Pass or the Minatomirai 1-day ticket?

The JR pass costs ¥100 more and adds JR Negishi Line trains between Yokohama and Shin-Sugita. Buy it if you will also ride JR in that area; otherwise the ¥460 ticket is enough.

Can I load the Tokyu 1-day pass onto Suica or Welcome Suica?

No. Tokyu sells it on PASMO cards only. Mobile PASMO, PASMO on Apple Pay and IC cards issued by other companies cannot be used. Use the Q SKIP digital ticket instead (adults only).

Good to know

Tokyu Toyoko Line trains continue onto the Minatomirai Line, so from Shibuya you can stay on the same train to Minatomirai or Motomachi-Chukagai.
A through ticket from a Tokyu station to Shin-Takashima, Minatomirai or Bashamichi is ¥20 cheaper (child ¥10) than two separate tickets. The calculator does not include this discount.
IC card fares are a little lower: ¥193 and ¥224 on the Minatomirai Line, ¥309 Tokyu Shibuya → Yokohama, ¥341 JR Shinagawa → Yokohama.
Children: Minatomirai Line and Tokyu child fares are half the adult fare rounded up to ¥10; JR drops the 5 yen. On the Minatomirai Line, up to two children aged 1–5 ride free with each paying passenger.
