Sankeien Garden Tickets: Entrance Fee, Opening Hours and How to Get There by Bus (2026)
Short answer: Sankeien Garden (三溪園), the large Japanese garden with old temple buildings in south Yokohama, costs ¥900 per adult (high school age and over) and ¥200 for elementary and junior high school students. It is open 9:00–17:00 every day except 26–31 December, and the last entry is 16:30. There is no train station next to it, so you take a Yokohama City Bus (¥220 per adult, any distance): bus 8 or 168 from Yokohama Station East Exit (about 40 minutes) or from Chinatown (about 15 minutes) to Sankeien-iriguchi, then walk 5 minutes. On weekends and holidays the Burari Sankeien BUS stops right at the gate. You don't need to book: pay at the gate by card, IC card or cash. Prices and routes from the official Sankeien and Yokohama City Bus pages, checked 2026-10-11.

- These prices have applied since 1 October 2023. Some parts of the official website (the small box at the top of each page) still show the old adult price of ¥700. The price list on the official "ご利用案内" (visitor information) page says ¥900.
- Discounts (¥800 / ¥100): showing a Minato Burari Ticket (Yokohama's one-day bus and subway ticket, see below), a JAF card, a few Japanese membership cards, or a discount coupon from a participating hotel. Only one discount at a time.
- Free: holders of a Japanese disability certificate and one companion.
- Yokohama residents aged 65 and over pay ¥700 with ID. This does not apply to visitors from outside Yokohama.
- The garden does not give refunds after you go in.

Opening hours and closing days
- Open: 9:00–17:00. Last entry: 16:30 (30 minutes before closing).
- Closed: 26 to 31 December. Open on all other days, including New Year's Day.
- Hours can change for events, and the garden may close early because of bad weather or accidents. The tea houses inside keep their own hours.
Because the last entry is 16:30 and the bus ride takes 15 to 40 minutes, put Sankeien in the morning of a Yokohama day and leave the harbour, which stays open into the evening, for later. Our Yokohama day trip itinerary shows that order.
How to get there by bus
All the buses below are Yokohama City Bus (横浜市営バス). The fare is a flat ¥220 per adult and ¥110 per child (ages 1–11) for any ride, by cash or IC card. Children under 1 ride free, and each adult can bring up to two children aged 1–5 free.
| From | Bus stop | Bus | Time | Get off at | Then |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yokohama Station East Exit | 2 | 8 (via Sakuragicho) or 168 | about 40 min | Sankeien-iriguchi | 5 min walk to the Main Gate |
| Yokohama Station East Exit | 2 | Burari Sankeien BUS (Sat, Sun and holidays) | about 40 min | Sankeien (in the car park) | at the gate |
| Sakuragicho Station | 2 | 8, or the Burari bus on weekends | about 30 min | Sankeien-iriguchi / Sankeien | 5 min / at the gate |
| Sakuragicho Station | 2 | 58 | about 30 min | Honmoku | 10 min walk |
| Sakuragicho Station | 11 | 101 (via Kannai) | about 30 min | Honmoku | 10 min walk |
| Yokohama Station East Exit | 3 | 106 (via Sakuragicho and Kannai) | about 40 min | Sankeien-iriguchi | 5 min walk |
| Chukagai-iriguchi (Chinatown, near Motomachi-Chukagai Station) | 2 | 8 or 168 | about 15 min | Sankeien-iriguchi | 5 min walk |
| JR Negishi Station | 1 | 58 or 101 | about 10 min | Honmoku | 10 min walk |
| JR Negishi Station | 7 | 54 or 97 | about 10 min | Sankeien Minamimon-iriguchi | 7 min walk to the South Gate |
Times are from the garden's official access map. Traffic can make the buses slower, especially on weekends.
Which one to take:
- From Tokyo or Yokohama Station: bus 8 or 168 from East Exit stop 2. On weekends the Burari Sankeien BUS leaves from the same stop and drops you in the garden car park (the city says the trip takes about 35 minutes).
- Coming from Chinatown or Yamashita Park: bus 8 or 168 from Chukagai-iriguchi, about 15 minutes. This is the easiest way to join Sankeien with the harbour.
- Shortest bus ride: take the train to JR Negishi Station (JR Negishi Line, four stops past Sakuragicho) and the bus from there takes about 10 minutes. The garden itself recommends this route in the cherry blossom season. JR Negishi Station is inside the area of JR East's Yokohama & Minatomirai Pass (Yokohama to Shin-Sugita), so compare it in the Yokohama day trip cost calculator.
- Driving: the car park next to the Main Gate costs ¥1,000 for the first 2 hours, then ¥200 per 30 minutes, cash only. It fills up in the plum, cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons.
Bus ticket or Minato Burari Ticket?
The Minato Burari Ticket is Yokohama's one-day ticket for city buses, Kanachu buses and the Blue Line subway around the harbour. It costs ¥700 per adult and ¥350 per child. Its area includes the Sankeien and Sankeien-iriguchi bus stops (but not every stop on the way, so stay on routes 8, 168 and the Burari bus). On top of the rides, showing it at Sankeien takes ¥100 off admission (¥800 / ¥100).
| Bus rides that day | Adult: single tickets + entry | Adult: Minato Burari + entry | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 (there and back) | 2 × ¥220 + ¥900 = ¥1,340 | ¥700 + ¥800 = ¥1,500 | single tickets, by ¥160 |
| 3 | 3 × ¥220 + ¥900 = ¥1,560 | ¥1,500 | Minato Burari, by ¥60 |
| 4 | 4 × ¥220 + ¥900 = ¥1,780 | ¥1,500 | Minato Burari, by ¥280 |
The rule: 3 or more bus or Blue Line rides in the area that day → buy the Minato Burari Ticket. Just there and back → pay ¥220 each way. For a child the break-even is the same (2 rides: ¥420 vs ¥450; 3 rides: ¥530 vs ¥450). The Minato Burari Ticket does not cover the Minatomirai Line or JR. Buy it in the my route app, on Klook or @Yokohama, or at Blue Line stations such as Yokohama and Sakuragicho. The city bus also has its own one-day ticket (¥600 / ¥300) for all city bus routes, but it gives no Sankeien discount.
Autumn 2026 at Sankeien
- Chrysanthemum show (菊花展): 31 October to 23 November 2026.
- Grand tea ceremony for the garden's 120th anniversary: 31 October and 1 November 2026. Sold out.
- Craft fair "手仕事に遊ぶ錦秋" vol. 10: 13 to 15 November 2026.
- Autumn leaves: late in the year. In 2025 the garden posted its autumn colour report on 15 December.
- Three-storied Pagoda: major repairs start in April 2027. From then on the pagoda will be covered by a roof frame and you won't be able to see it, so go before spring 2027 if the pagoda is what you want to see.
- Old Yanohara House (the big thatched farmhouse): on 20 January 2026 the garden announced that it has stopped opening it to visitors.

- Wheelchairs can be borrowed free (4 at the Main Gate, 1 at the South Gate, one per group, no booking).
- No pets (assistance dogs are welcome).
- The garden links to an audio guide on its website.
