Hakone Open-Air Museum Tickets: Price, Online Discount, Hours and Access (2026)
Short answer: an adult ticket to the Hakone Open-Air Museum costs ¥2,000 at the counter and ¥1,800 online. A Hakone Freepass or the museum's own coupon page takes ¥100 off the counter price (¥1,900), but discounts cannot be combined, so buying online is the cheapest way for one person or a family. The museum is open 9:00–17:00 every day of the year (last entry 16:30) and is a 2-minute walk from Chokoku-no-Mori Station on the Hakone Tozan Train. Prices from the museum's official site and Hakone Navi (the Odakyu Hakone group's site), checked 2026-10-10.
Ticket prices
| Who | Same-day (counter) | Online ticket | Group of 15+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥2,000 | ¥1,800 | ¥1,800 |
| University and high school students | ¥1,600 | ¥1,400 | ¥1,400 |
| Junior high and elementary school students | ¥800 | ¥600 | ¥600 |
| Preschool children | free | free | free |
- Disability certificate holders: adults ¥1,000; students free. One caregiver per person pays ¥1,000.
- Groups of 15 or more must book through the museum's group procedure.
- The museum lists categories by school level (not by exact age). Bring a student ID if you want the student price.
Which ticket is cheapest?
| How you buy | Adult | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Same-day at the counter | ¥2,000 | no planning needed |
| Same-day + Hakone Freepass | ¥1,900 | show your Freepass: ¥100 off (Hakone Navi) |
| Same-day + museum coupon page | ¥1,900 | show the page on your phone at checkout, also works at the cashless ticket machines; one group of up to 14 people per use |
| Online ticket | ¥1,800 | buy ahead on the museum's site; you skip the ticket counter line |
Discounts cannot be combined: the coupon page says it cannot be used with other discounts, so a Freepass holder does not get ¥200 off. The online ticket is still ¥100 cheaper than the Freepass discount, and the museum itself says buying in advance is the cheapest way in.
Family example (2 adults + 2 elementary school children): ¥5,600 at the counter (2 × ¥2,000 + 2 × ¥800) or ¥4,800 online (2 × ¥1,800 + 2 × ¥600). Online saves ¥800.
Your Hakone Freepass is still worth having for the trains, cable car, ropeway, pirate ship and buses. Check it with the Hakone Freepass calculator, and read the break-even math.
Opening hours
- 9:00–17:00, 365 days a year. Last entry is 16:30.
- The museum also opens on normal hours over the New Year holidays.
- Some works may be off view while exhibitions change or during maintenance.
How to get there
- By train (easiest): Hakone Tozan Train from Hakone-Yumoto to Chokoku-no-Mori Station, then a 2-minute walk. Chokoku-no-Mori is the stop before Gora, so it fits the classic loop before you ride the cable car up to Sounzan. See the full day in order in our Hakone day trip itinerary.
- By bus: from Odawara Station East Exit (bus stop 3 for H, stop 5 for J and Z) or Hakone-Yumoto Station (stop 1 or 2), take bus H, J or Z to Ninotaira-iriguchi, then walk about 6 minutes.
- By car: parking costs ¥500 for up to 3 hours, then ¥500 per extra hour, and is only for museum visitors.
Coming from Tokyo, the Romancecar takes you to Hakone-Yumoto: see Hakone Romancecar tickets and the Hakone day trip cost from Tokyo.
What is inside
- Outdoor sculptures: about 100 works by modern and contemporary masters (Rodin, Bourdelle, Miró, Moore and others) across 70,000 m² of gardens.
- Picasso Pavilion: the museum owns more than 300 Picasso works, centered on 188 ceramics bought from his daughter Maya. The pavilion shows them on rotation.
- Henry Moore collection: 26 pieces on display around the grounds, one of the largest Moore collections in the world.
- Symphonic Sculpture: an 18-meter tower of stained glass. You can climb the spiral staircase inside for a view over the museum and the mountains.
- Woods of Net: a giant hand-knit net artwork that children aged 12 and under can climb in (shoes off). It may close in bad weather.
- Foot bath: Hakone Navi lists a hot spring foot bath on site.
The official Hakone Navi page says you can spend a whole day here. For a day trip from Tokyo, plan your loop so you arrive well before the 16:30 last entry.
Lockers, strollers and house rules
- Lockers at the entrance are free (you put in ¥100 and get it back). For large bags, ask the museum. Chokoku-no-Mori Station also has paid coin lockers. Traveling with a suitcase? See Hakone luggage storage and delivery.
- Wheelchairs and strollers are free to borrow at the Main Gallery and New Gallery information desks (subject to availability). A nursing room is at the New Gallery information desk.
- Not allowed: touching the works, eating outside the outdoor benches and other set areas, pets (except assistance dogs), drones, and inside the galleries: flash photos, video, tripods and selfie sticks.
