Mt. Oyama day trip from Tokyo: cost calculator (Tanzawa-Oyama Freepass A vs B)
Short answer: from Shinjuku, the Tanzawa-Oyama Freepass Ticket A costs ¥2,520 per adult (¥920 child) and covers the Odakyu round trip, the bus from Isehara and the Oyama Cable Car both ways. Ticket B (¥1,560) covers the train and the bus only. Rule: ride the cable car both ways → Ticket A (saves ¥310); ride one way or hike → Ticket B. Getting to Isehara
We could not confirm these two fares on an official page, so we do not guess them. Find the Odakyu fare on the official fare search or the fare chart above the ticket machines; the bus fare is shown on the fare display at the front of the bus. Without them, the calculator still compares Ticket A and Ticket B and shows the break-even point.

How much does a day trip to Mt. Oyama from Tokyo cost?

Is the Tanzawa-Oyama Freepass worth it?
Compared with single tickets, Ticket A from Shinjuku pays off if your Odakyu and bus fares for the round trip add up to more than ¥1,250 per adult (¥2,520 minus the ¥1,270 cable car return). Ticket B pays off if they add up to more than ¥1,560. Enter the fares in the calculator to see your result. The pass also gives discounts at local shops and sights, which we do not count.
Should I buy Ticket A or Ticket B?
Ticket A if you ride the cable car up and down: ¥2,520 against ¥2,830 for Ticket B plus a cable car return. Ticket B if you ride one way and hike the other: ¥2,140 with the discounted ¥580 one-way ticket, ¥380 less than Ticket A. Ticket B also if you hike both ways.
How much is the Oyama Cable Car, and when does it run?
To Afuri-jinja: ¥640 one way and ¥1,270 return (child ¥320 and ¥640), about 6 minutes. To Oyama-dera only: ¥360 and ¥700. It runs about every 20 minutes, 9:00-16:30 on weekdays and 9:00-17:00 on weekends and holidays, with longer hours at New Year, Golden Week and in the autumn leaves season.
Does the Tanzawa-Oyama Freepass include the Romancecar?
No. The Romancecar costs ¥750 per adult (¥380 child) extra each way between Shinjuku and Isehara, on top of the pass. Buying the seat online is ¥50 cheaper.
Where do I buy the Tanzawa-Oyama Freepass?
At Odakyu ticket machines or an Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center (paper ticket), or online on EMot Online Tickets (digital, one ticket per smartphone). It is sold from one month before your travel date and is valid for 2 days; the day you start counts as day 1. The price depends on your departure station.
Good to know
- Bus: from Isehara Station North Exit, stop 4, take Kanachu bus I-10 "Oyama Cable" or I-11 (direct) to the last stop, about 30 minutes. Then walk up the Koma-sando shopping street to the cable car, about 15 minutes.
- Oyama Cable Car gates take EMot e-tickets and contactless credit cards, not Suica or PASMO. The ticket windows take cash, credit cards, IC cards and PayPay.
- The cable car stops in heavy rain, strong wind and thunder. Check the official timetable page on the day.
- Children under 6 do not need a Freepass. Unused passes can be refunded before your trip for a ¥220 fee.
- Ticket B holders get the ¥580 price on a one-way ride on the whole line. The calculator uses the regular ¥1,270 return for Ticket B holders riding both ways.
