Mt. Takao Onsen (Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu): Price, Hours, Tattoo Rule and the ¥3,480 Weekday Onsen Ticket (2026)
Mt. Takao has a real hot spring at the bottom of the mountain, and it is one minute from the station exit. Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu charges ¥1,100 on weekdays and ¥1,300 on weekends, holidays and peak days per adult (children aged 4 to 12: ¥550 / ¥650) and stays open until 22:30 every day, so you can soak after the last cable car and still catch a train to Shinjuku. Two things decide whether this page is good news for you. First, the bath refuses anyone with a tattoo, however small and even if you tape it over. Second, on a weekday Keio sells the Takaosan Yuttari Kippu for ¥3,480 from Shinjuku: train both ways, cable car or lift both ways, the bath, a towel set and a meal in one ticket. That is ¥930 more than the Mt. Takao Ticket plus the bath, so it pays off only if you would eat there anyway. Prices and rules below are from the onsen's own pages and Keio's fare table, checked 2026-10-16.
Admission and hours
| Adult (junior high school age and up) | Child (4 to 12) | |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday | ¥1,100 | ¥550 |
| Weekend, public holiday, peak season | ¥1,300 | ¥650 |
| Book of 10 tickets | ¥9,000 (adult) |
- 3 and under enter free.
- Peak season means 29 December to 3 January, Golden Week, Obon in mid-August, the autumn-leaves season and "other dates". In practice, plan on ¥1,300 any time from late October to early December.
- Open 8:00 to 22:30, last entry 21:45, every day of the year. It may close without notice for inspections or when the trains stop; the onsen posts closures on its X account.
- Once inside, bathe as often as you like. Leave the building and you pay again: there is no re-entry.
- The restaurant is open 9:00 to 22:15 (last order 21:45). The massage corner runs 9:00 to 22:00, last booking 21:00.
The tattoo rule, in full
This is the strictest wording I have seen on any day-use onsen around Tokyo, so here is exactly what the FAQ says.
- Any tattoo means no entry: permanent, fashion or sticker tattoos, of any size.
- Covering it does not help. Tape, stickers and plasters are refused on hygiene grounds, and a guest with a tattoo found inside is asked to leave.
- The ban covers the whole building, including the restaurant.
If you have a tattoo, skip Takao for the bath and plan a soak elsewhere. In Hakone, Hakone Yuryo accepts tattoos openly and has private baths; see the Hakone day-use onsen guide for its prices and the train from Hakone-Yumoto.
What to bring and what is provided
- Shampoo and body soap are at every washing station.
- Towels are not included. Bring a small towel and a bath towel from your hotel. Bath towels can be rented for a fee at the counter (the onsen does not publish the price online), and the Yuttari Kippu comes with a towel set.
- Plasters and compresses must come off before you bathe. A grazed knee from the trail is fine once it has stopped bleeding.
- No phones or cameras in the bathing area; the changing room asks you not to use them either.
- No outside food or drink. There is a water cooler in the bath area.
- Parking is free for 3 hours if you use the onsen, but the operator tells weekend visitors to come by train.
The baths
The water is a natural alkaline simple hot spring pumped from about 1,000 m underground and reaching the surface at 26.2°C, then heated. Alkaline simple springs are the gentle, slippery-feeling type; the onsen calls it "beautifying water", and the official benefit list is the usual one for this type: muscle and joint pain, stiff shoulders, poor circulation and fatigue, which after Trail 6 is the point.
Seven baths, all on one floor, separated by sex:
- Open-air rock bath with the natural spring water, in two temperatures: a lukewarm pool and a hot one.
- Open-air carbonated bath (artificial carbonic water, the fizzy kind that leaves bubbles on your skin).
- Silk bath with micro-bubbles that turn the water white.
- Seasonal bath, which changes with the calendar.
- Sauna (far-infrared) and a cold plunge next to it.
- Seated bath, where water runs over your shoulders and back.
Children aged 7 and over may not use the other sex's bath (a Tokyo rule since 1 April 2022), and the onsen may also refuse a younger child who is 120 cm or taller. Children cannot bathe without an adult.
The Yuttari Kippu: Keio's weekday onsen ticket
The Takaosan Yuttari Kippu (高尾山湯ったりきっぷ, "Mt. Takao Onsen Ticket" on Keio's English flyer) is one paper ticket from a Keio ticket machine that covers four things:
- Keio train from the station where you buy it to Takaosanguchi and back.
- Cable car or chair lift between Kiyotaki and Takaosan stations, both ways.
- Admission to Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu, with a towel set.
- A meal coupon for a dish from the onsen restaurant's seasonal menu.
| Bought at | Price (adult) |
|---|---|
| Shinjuku, Shibuya, Kichijoji, Hashimoto | ¥3,480 |
| Shimo-Kitazawa, Meidaimae | ¥3,450 |
| Chofu | ¥3,380 |
| Fuchu | ¥3,320 |
| Takahatafudo | ¥3,200 |
| Keio-Hachioji | ¥3,170 |
| Takao | ¥3,070 |
Keio's table was revised on 1 October 2023. Keio's flyer also lists small extras for ticket holders: ¥200 off the Takao Trick Art Museum, ¥50 off a tengu-yaki pastry at Takaosan Sumika and ¥100 off the Monkey Park, all on the day of the ticket only.
Is it worth it?
Do the sum for a weekday from Shinjuku, one adult:
- Every fare separately: Keio ¥430 × 2 + cable car ¥980 + bath ¥1,100 = ¥2,940, plus whatever you spend on a meal and towels.
- Mt. Takao Ticket + bath at the door: ¥1,450 + ¥1,100 = ¥2,550, plus the meal and towels.
- Yuttari Kippu: ¥3,480, nothing more to pay for the train, the ride, the bath, the towels or the meal.
So the Yuttari Kippu is really a ¥930 meal-and-towel coupon stapled to the Mt. Takao Ticket and a bath ticket. A tororo soba lunch and a rented bath towel cost more than that on their own, and Keio's flyer puts the overall saving at "more than ¥1,000" against buying everything separately. My rule: buy it if you will eat at the onsen; buy the Mt. Takao Ticket if you will eat on the mountain or back in Shinjuku.
The conditions
- Adults only. There is no child version; children pay the regular fares and ¥550 at the door.
- Weekdays only, and not sold at all in November, from 30 December to 3 January, during Golden Week, during Obon, or on days the onsen is closed. November is the autumn-leaves month, exactly when the mountain is busiest, so for a November trip plan on the Mt. Takao Ticket plus ¥1,300 at the door instead.
- Sold at Keio and Inokashira Line ticket machines, except Takaosanguchi. Buy it at Shinjuku before you board. The sale-status notice Keio published for October 2026 lists it as on sale.
- Valid on the day of purchase only. Unused tickets can be refunded that day at the station where you bought them, less a fee.
- It does not include a seat on the weekend Mt. TAKAO reserved-seat train, which does not run on weekdays anyway.
Not from Shinjuku, or travelling with children? The Mt. Takao day trip cost calculator adds up the train and the ride for your party; add ¥1,100 or ¥1,300 per adult for the bath.
Fitting the bath into the day
- Takaosanguchi Station exit to the onsen door: about 1 minute. The building is beside the station, on the same side as the trail head.
- Last cable car down: 17:45 on weekdays and 18:00 on weekends from September to November, earlier in winter (see the cable car vs chair lift guide for every month). The onsen takes guests until 21:45, so there is no rush.
- Trains back: the Keio Line to Shinjuku takes 45 to 55 minutes. Leaving the bath at 21:00 still gets you to Shinjuku before the last trains.
- Bags: there are coin lockers in Kiyotaki cable car station (¥400 to ¥900) for the walk; for the bath you will want your change of clothes with you.
- Busy days: the onsen asks drivers to leave the car at home on weekends and in the autumn-leaves season, which tells you the bath fills up too. A weekday late afternoon is the quiet slot, and that is also when the Yuttari Kippu is sold.
Massage prices
The "hogushi-dokoro" massage corner inside the onsen is all-hands and bookable by phone or at the desk. Body courses: 20 minutes ¥2,300, 40 minutes ¥4,300, 60 minutes ¥6,300, 80 minutes ¥8,200, 100 minutes ¥10,200. Foot courses cost the same for 20, 40 and 60 minutes; a 20-minute head massage is ¥2,600, and a 10-minute extension ¥1,200. Prices include tax.
Mt. Takao tours and tickets
- Mt. Takao tickets and tours on Klook pay in your own currency; check whether the onsen is included before you compare with the fares above
- Mt. Takao hiking day trips from Tokyo on Viator guided hikes; most end before the bath, so keep ¥1,100 to ¥1,300 aside
PR Affiliate links (disclosure): booking through them supports this site at no extra cost. You do not need a booking for the onsen: pay at the entrance, or buy the Yuttari Kippu at a Keio ticket machine on a weekday.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the onsen at Mt. Takao?
¥1,100 per adult on weekdays and ¥1,300 on weekends, public holidays and peak season (29 December to 3 January, Golden Week, Obon and the autumn-leaves season). Children aged 4 to 12 pay ¥550 or ¥650, and children 3 and under are free.
Can I go in with a tattoo?
No. Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu refuses guests with any tattoo, including small ones, fashion and sticker tattoos, and covering it with tape does not change the answer. Hakone Yuryo in Hakone is the nearest day-use onsen that openly accepts tattoos.
What time does the Mt. Takao onsen close?
22:30, with last entry at 21:45, every day of the year. The restaurant takes its last order at 21:45.
Is the Mt. Takao onsen ticket (Yuttari Kippu) worth it?
From Shinjuku it costs ¥3,480 and includes the train, the cable car or lift, the bath, a towel set and a meal. The Mt. Takao Ticket plus the bath is ¥2,550, so you are paying ¥930 for the meal and towels. Worth it if you plan to eat at the onsen; it is adults only, weekdays only, and not sold in November.
Do I need to bring a towel?
Yes. The onsen provides shampoo and body soap but not towels. Bath towels can be rented for a fee, and the Yuttari Kippu includes a towel set.
