Is the Hakone Freepass Worth It? The Break-Even Math (2026)
Short answer: yes, but only if you do the full Hakone loop (train, cable car, ropeway, lake cruise and bus). For the classic loop from Odawara, single tickets cost ¥6,520 per adult and the 2-day pass from Odawara costs ¥6,000, so the pass saves ¥520. Skip the ropeway or the cruise and single tickets win. All fares are from the official Odakyu and Hakone operator pages, checked 2026-10-08.
Want to test your own plan? Use the Hakone Freepass calculator. Tick the rides you will take and it compares them with the pass.
Hakone Freepass prices (2026)
| Pass | Adult | Child (6–11) |
|---|---|---|
| From Odawara, 2 days | ¥6,000 | ¥1,500 |
| From Odawara, 3 days | ¥6,400 | ¥1,750 |
| From Shinjuku, 2 days | ¥7,100 | ¥1,600 |
| From Shinjuku, 3 days | ¥7,500 | ¥1,850 |
Children under 6 do not need a ticket. The pass is valid until the last service on day 2 (or day 3). It is not 48 or 72 hours from purchase.
What the classic loop costs without a pass
This is the loop most visitors do: up by train and cable car, across by ropeway, over the lake by boat, back down by bus.
| Ride | Adult single fare |
|---|---|
| Hakone Tozan Train: Odawara → Hakone-Yumoto | ¥360 |
| Tozan Train + Cable Car: Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Sounzan | ¥890 |
| Hakone Ropeway: Sounzan → Owakudani → Togendai | ¥2,000 |
| Sightseeing Cruise: Togendai → Hakone-machi / Moto-Hakone | ¥1,700 |
| Hakone Tozan Bus: Moto-Hakone → Hakone-Yumoto | ¥1,210 |
| Hakone Tozan Train: Hakone-Yumoto → Odawara | ¥360 |
| Total | ¥6,520 |
¥6,520 − ¥6,000 = ¥520 saved with the Odawara pass.
Starting in Shinjuku: the savings grow
The Shinjuku version adds one round trip on regular Odakyu trains (Shinjuku ⇄ Odawara). The regular adult ticket fare is ¥910 each way (¥901 with an IC card such as Suica or PASMO).
- Single tickets: ¥6,520 + ¥910 × 2 = ¥8,340
- Hakone Freepass from Shinjuku (2 days): ¥7,100
- You save ¥1,240 per adult (¥1,222 if you would have paid by IC card).
The break-even point: what happens if you skip a ride
The two most expensive rides decide everything. Drop one of them and the pass is no longer worth it.
| Your plan (adult) | Single tickets | Pass | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full loop, from Odawara | ¥6,520 | ¥6,000 | Pass saves ¥520 |
| Full loop, from Shinjuku | ¥8,340 | ¥7,100 | Pass saves ¥1,240 |
| No cruise, from Odawara | ¥4,820 | ¥6,000 | Singles cheaper by ¥1,180 |
| No cruise, from Shinjuku | ¥6,640 | ¥7,100 | Singles cheaper by ¥460 |
| No ropeway, from Odawara | ¥4,520 | ¥6,000 | Singles cheaper by ¥1,480 |
| No ropeway, from Shinjuku | ¥6,340 | ¥7,100 | Singles cheaper by ¥760 |
Extra bus rides (for example to a hot spring or a museum) are also covered by the pass, so every extra ride pushes the math further in favor of the pass. Add them in the calculator's "other rides" box.
The pass also gives discounts
Show the pass at about 70 places in Hakone (hot springs, museums, restaurants) for a discount. We do not add these to the math above, because the amount depends on where you go. If you plan to visit several museums, the real savings are higher.
What the pass does not cover
- The Romancecar. The limited express from Shinjuku needs an extra ticket: ¥1,200 per adult (¥600 child) each way to Hakone-Yumoto. With the Romancecar both ways, a 2-day pass from Shinjuku comes to ¥9,500 per adult.
- Odakyu trains on the Odawara version. If you buy the Odawara pass, you pay for your own train to Odawara.
When the pass is not worth it
- You only go to Hakone-Yumoto for a hot spring and come back.
- You want to see Owakudani but will not cross Lake Ashi (no cruise).
- The Ropeway is closed on your dates. It stops every year for periodic inspection, and also for strong wind or bad weather. Check the official Transportation Info page before you buy, and run your real plan through the calculator.
Where to buy
- Online: EMot Online Tickets (digital pass on your smartphone, one per traveler, or a paper ticket option).
- At Odakyu ticket machines or Odakyu Sightseeing Service Centers (paper ticket).
Quick checklist before you buy
- ☐ I will ride the ropeway and the lake cruise → buy the pass.
- ☐ I start in Shinjuku → the Shinjuku version saves more.
- ☐ I want the Romancecar → budget ¥1,200 extra each way.
- ☐ I checked that the Ropeway is running on my dates (official Transportation Info page).
