Yokohama to Kamakura by Train: Which Train to Take, How Long It Takes, and the Loop Back via Enoshima (2026)

Updated 2026-10-25

Stand on the JR Yokosuka Line platform at Yokohama Station and get on a train bound for Zushi or Kurihama. It reaches Kamakura without a change, about 30 minutes later by the Kamakura City Tourist Association's count and about 25 minutes by the Kanagawa prefecture's tourism site. That is the whole trip. The rest of this page is for people staying near Chinatown or Minatomirai rather than at Yokohama Station, for anyone asking what the fare is, and for the better way home: the Enoden along the sea to Enoshima and the Shonan Monorail back to Ofuna, which adds ¥600 per adult on top of the JR fares. Private-railway fares come from the operators' own pages, checked 2026-10-25. JR East's fare pages block our checker, so the JR fare is the one number on this page you pay at the gate.

Route map from Yokohama to Kamakura. JR Yokosuka Line from Yokohama Station through Ofuna and Kita-Kamakura to Kamakura, one train, about 25 to 30 minutes, fare paid at the gate; take a train bound for Zushi or Kurihama, others change at Ofuna. Minatomirai Line to Yokohama Station 200 yen from Minatomirai or Bashamichi and 230 yen from Motomachi-Chukagai, IC 193 and 224 yen. Loop back: Enoden Kamakura to Enoshima 260 yen, child 130 yen, 23 minutes; walk to Shonan-Enoshima; Shonan Monorail to Ofuna 340 yen, child 170 yen, 14 minutes; JR Ofuna to Yokohama.
The dashed JR line is the way there. The green and purple lines are the way back if you want the sea and the island as well.

Which train at Yokohama Station?

The destination on the departure board decides it, not the line name.

On the board What happens
Yokosuka Line, bound for Zushi or Kurihama Direct to Kamakura. Kita-Kamakura is the stop before it.
Shonan-Shinjuku Line rapid, bound for Zushi Also direct. The Kanagawa tourism site says only the Zushi-bound rapids run through to Kamakura.
Shonan-Shinjuku Line bound for Odawara, or any Tokaido Line train Not Kamakura. Get off at Ofuna and change to the Yokosuka Line, two stops. Engakuji temple's access page gives the same instruction.

Zushi and Kurihama are the next towns down the line past Kamakura, so any train with one of those names on it goes through the station you want. Odawara is the Hakone direction and never passes Kamakura.

How long does it take?

Either figure makes Kamakura closer to Yokohama than Yokohama is to most of Tokyo. A Yokohama hotel is a good base for it, and you can be at the Great Buddha before the coaches from Tokyo arrive.

How much is the train from Yokohama to Kamakura?

JR Yokosuka Line, Yokohama → Kamakura: tap a Suica or PASMO card at the gate and the fare comes off at Kamakura. JR East raised its fares on 14 March 2026, and its fare table has refused to open for our checker since then, so I print no JR figure I have not read on the operator's page. Children aged 6 to 11 pay half the adult JR fare.

Getting to Yokohama Station first

Staying in Minatomirai or by Chinatown? The Minatomirai Line brings you to Yokohama Station, where you change to JR.

Minatomirai Line, to Yokohama Station Ticket IC card Child (6–11)
From Shin-Takashima, Minatomirai or Bashamichi ¥200 ¥193 ¥100
From Nihon-odori or Motomachi-Chukagai (Chinatown) ¥230 ¥224 ¥120

The way back: loop home through Enoshima

Going straight back by JR is the quick option. The loop below costs ¥600 per adult (¥300 per child) more and trades a 25-minute ride for the Enoden's run along the beach, the island, and a monorail that hangs under its track.

  1. Kamakura → Enoshima by Enoden: ¥260, child ¥130, 23 minutes. Want the Great Buddha on the way? Ride to Hase first (¥200, 5 minutes), then Hase → Enoshima (¥260).
  2. Walk to the monorail. The Shonan Monorail's Shonan-Enoshima station is a short walk from the Enoden's Enoshima station through the streets behind the beach. If you go out to the island itself, allow more: the Enoshima Aquarium says 10 minutes on foot from either station.
  3. Shonan-Enoshima → Ofuna by Shonan Monorail: ¥340, child ¥170, 14 minutes.
  4. Ofuna → Yokohama by JR: any Yokosuka Line, Shonan-Shinjuku Line or Tokaido Line train heading north stops at Yokohama. Fare at the gate.
Ticket table of what you pay besides the JR fare, per person, Yokohama to Kamakura and back. Straight back by JR: nothing extra. Loop through Enoshima: Enoden 260 yen plus Shonan Monorail 340 yen, 600 yen adult, 300 yen child. Loop with a Great Buddha stop at Hase: Enoden 200 plus 260 yen plus monorail 340 yen, 800 yen adult, 400 yen child. Enoden Noriorikun 1-day pass 800 yen adult, 400 yen child, more than the 460 yen of Enoden rides on the loop, so single tickets win.
Two Enoden rides come to ¥460, so the ¥800 Noriorikun stays in the machine.

The Enoden's Noriorikun day pass costs ¥800 (child ¥400). On this loop you ride the Enoden once, or twice with the Hase stop, for ¥260 or ¥460. Pay single fares or tap your IC card; the pass only makes sense on a day built around the Enoden, which the Enoden pass guide adds up. The monorail's own day ticket (¥750) is the same story: one ride is ¥340, so skip it.

If you are returning to Kamakura later anyway, or want the full Enoshima and Kamakura day, the Kamakura to Enoshima guide and the Shonan Monorail guide go deeper on each leg.

Japan Rail Pass holders

The Japan Rail Pass is a product of the six JR companies, so it covers the Yokosuka Line, the Shonan-Shinjuku Line and the Negishi Line between Yokohama and Kamakura. It does not cover the Minatomirai Line, the Enoden or the Shonan Monorail. With the pass, the straight trip costs nothing; the loop costs the ¥600 of private-railway fares above.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a Suica or PASMO card from Yokohama all the way to Kamakura and round the loop?

Yes. JR East, the Minatomirai Line, the Enoden and the Shonan Monorail all take the national transport IC cards; the Enoden's access page says so for its line and the Minatomirai Line lists IC fares. You tap out and in again where you change companies, at Yokohama Station, at Enoshima and at Ofuna.

Is Kamakura on the way from Yokohama to Tokyo?

No. Kamakura lies south-west of Yokohama and Tokyo lies north-east, so a Kamakura stop on a Yokohama-to-Tokyo day means going out and back. From Kamakura the Yokosuka Line continues to Tokyo Station in about an hour, so you can finish the day in Tokyo without returning to Yokohama.

Does the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass help if I start in Yokohama?

No. It is an Odakyu product built around an Odakyu round trip from Shinjuku or Fujisawa, and no part of the Yokohama route is on Odakyu. From Yokohama, single fares or an IC card are the way; the Enoshima and Kamakura calculator shows the pass only pays once you start from Odakyu's side.

What do children pay?

On JR, children aged 6 to 11 pay half the adult fare. On the Minatomirai Line they pay half rounded up to ¥10 (¥100 or ¥120 to Yokohama Station), and up to two children aged 1 to 5 ride free with each paying passenger. The Enoden lists child fares next to the adult ones (Kamakura → Enoshima ¥130, Kamakura → Hase ¥100) and the Shonan Monorail charges ¥170 for Shonan-Enoshima → Ofuna.
