Tokyo to Yokohama by Train: Fares From Each Station, Travel Time and Why Not the Shinkansen (2026)

Updated 2026-10-15

Yokohama is the easiest day trip on this site to reach, and the one where the starting station matters more than the line. Three railways run there from central Tokyo and none of them needs a change: JR from Tokyo Station and Shinagawa, Keikyu from Shinagawa and Haneda Airport, and the Tokyu Toyoko Line from Shibuya. The cheapest ride is the ¥310 Tokyu train from Shibuya, and it is also the only one that keeps going past Yokohama Station to Minatomirai and Chinatown without a change. There is a Shinkansen, but it stops at Shin-Yokohama, a different station on the far side of the city, so for a day trip it is slower door to door and costs more. Fares below are from Tokyu, Keikyu, the Minatomirai Line and JR East, and the minutes are from the Yokohama Official Visitors Guide, checked 2026-10-15. JR East's own site blocked us on that day, so its fares come from the March 2026 revision table we read earlier this month, and the Tokyo Station fare is left as "at the gate".

Route map of four ways from Tokyo to Yokohama. JR from Tokyo Station through Shinagawa, about 25 minutes, fare at the gate, 350 yen from Shinagawa and 440 yen from Shibuya. Keikyu from Shinagawa 320 yen, 16 minutes, and from Haneda Airport Terminals 1 and 2 via Keikyu-Kamata 400 yen, about 30 minutes. Tokyu Toyoko Line from Shibuya 310 yen, about 25 minutes, running on along the Minatomirai Line to Minatomirai and Motomachi-Chukagai for Chinatown, 230 yen more. The Shinkansen stops at Shin-Yokohama, with a change to the JR Yokohama Line for Yokohama.
Four railways, one city. The red Tokyu line is the only one that continues into the harbour district on the same train.

Which station are you starting from?

You are near Take Fare (adult, one way) Time
Shibuya Tokyu Toyoko Line ¥310 (child ¥160) About 25 minutes
Shibuya JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line ¥440 About 25 minutes
Shinagawa Keikyu Main Line ¥320 (IC ¥313) 16 minutes
Shinagawa JR Tokaido or Yokosuka Line ¥350 (IC ¥341) 16 minutes
Tokyo Station JR Tokaido, Yokosuka or Keihin-Tohoku Line At the gate (more than Shinagawa's ¥350) About 25 minutes
Haneda Airport (T1·T2) Keikyu Airport Line ¥400 (IC ¥397) About 30 minutes
Shinjuku JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line direct, or the Yamanote Line to Shibuya and then Tokyu At the gate Not published on a page we could open

The pattern is simple. Where JR and a private railway share a start, the private railway is cheaper: Keikyu beats JR by ¥30 from Shinagawa, and Tokyu beats JR by ¥130 from Shibuya, for the same number of minutes in the visitors guide. JR's advantage is Tokyo Station itself, which only JR serves, and the Japan Rail Pass.

The 25 minutes from Tokyo Station is the Tokaido Line figure. The Keihin-Tohoku Line follows the same route but stops at every station, so if two trains are waiting on the Tokyo Station platforms, take the Tokaido or Yokosuka Line one.

Ticket table of one-way adult fares to Yokohama by starting station, cheapest first: Shibuya on the Tokyu Toyoko Line 310 yen, about 25 minutes; Shinagawa on Keikyu 320 yen, 16 minutes; Shinagawa on JR 350 yen, 16 minutes; Haneda Airport on Keikyu 400 yen, about 30 minutes; Shibuya on the JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line 440 yen, about 25 minutes; Tokyo Station on JR about 25 minutes with the fare shown at the gate.
Same minutes, different fare: the private railways undercut JR from both Shibuya and Shinagawa.

Why I start from Shibuya when the day is sightseeing

Yokohama Station is not where the sights are. Minatomirai, the Red Brick Warehouse, Yamashita Park and Chinatown are all on the Minatomirai Line, a short six-station railway that starts under Yokohama Station and ends at Motomachi-Chukagai, the Chinatown stop. Tokyu's Toyoko Line trains run straight onto it, so from Shibuya you sit in one seat from Tokyo to the harbour. Shibuya to Motomachi-Chukagai is ¥310 on Tokyu plus ¥230 on the Minatomirai Line, ¥540 on one tap of an IC card.

Arrive by JR or Keikyu and you change at Yokohama Station instead: down to the Minatomirai Line platforms, a new fare of ¥200 or ¥230 depending on the stop, and a second set of gates. It is not hard, but it is the moment most visitors lose ten minutes and then wonder whether a day pass would have been smarter. For that question the Yokohama day trip calculator adds up your rides against the Minatomirai 1-day ticket, the Tokyu Line & Minatomirai Line One-Day Pass (¥1,220) and JR's Yokohama & Minatomirai Pass (¥560). The short version: if you ride the Minatomirai Line three or more times, the 1-day ticket pays.

Is the Shinkansen worth it to Yokohama?

No, and the reason is a station name. The Tokaido Shinkansen does not stop at Yokohama. It stops at Shin-Yokohama, which is inland, a separate ride away on the JR Yokohama Line, and nowhere near the port. From Tokyo Station you would ride the bullet train, leave the Shinkansen gates, find the Yokohama Line platform, and ride again into Yokohama Station, where the JR Tokaido Line train you did not take has probably already arrived. The Shinkansen is the right train when Yokohama is a stop on the way to Kyoto or Osaka, or when you are coming back from Hakone via Odawara and already hold a Shinkansen ticket: then Shin-Yokohama is a fair place to get off. For a day trip from Tokyo, ignore it. (JR Central does not publish a plain fare page we could open, so there is no Shinkansen price here; the ticket machine will show it, and it is a multiple of the ¥350 JR fare from Shinagawa.)

Child fares and IC cards

Suica and PASMO work on JR, Keikyu, Tokyu and the Minatomirai Line, so one card covers every route on this page.

Japan Rail Pass holders

The Japan Rail Pass is issued jointly by the six JR companies, so it covers JR East's Tokaido, Yokosuka, Keihin-Tohoku and Shonan-Shinjuku Lines to Yokohama, and the Shinkansen to Shin-Yokohama. It does not cover Tokyu, Keikyu or the Minatomirai Line, which belong to other companies. With the pass, ride JR from Tokyo Station or Shinagawa, then pay the Minatomirai Line by IC card or buy JR's ¥560 Yokohama & Minatomirai Pass at a JR reserved-seat machine in Yokohama Station, which covers the whole Minatomirai Line for the day.

From the airports

Haneda is the easy one: a Keikyu train from Terminals 1·2 reaches Yokohama in about 30 minutes for ¥400 by way of Keikyu-Kamata, where the airport branch joins the main line. If you land at Haneda and your hotel is in Yokohama, there is no reason to go into Tokyo first. From Narita the visitors guide quotes around 90 minutes by express train or limousine bus; the fare depends on the train, and we have not checked it against the operators' pages, so look it up before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct train from Tokyo to Yokohama?

Yes, from every major starting point. JR runs direct from Tokyo Station and Shinagawa, Keikyu from Shinagawa and Haneda Airport, and Tokyu from Shibuya. Only the Shinkansen requires a change, because it stops at Shin-Yokohama rather than Yokohama.

How much is the train from Tokyo to Yokohama?

Between ¥310 and ¥440 one way per adult, depending on the station and railway: ¥310 on Tokyu from Shibuya, ¥320 on Keikyu from Shinagawa, ¥350 on JR from Shinagawa, ¥440 on JR from Shibuya. The JR fare from Tokyo Station is shown at the gate and is a little higher than from Shinagawa.

How long is the train from Tokyo to Yokohama?

About 25 minutes from Tokyo Station or Shibuya, 16 minutes from Shinagawa and about 30 minutes from Haneda Airport, according to the Yokohama Official Visitors Guide. Add 5 to 10 minutes on the Minatomirai Line to reach the harbour sights.

Can I use a Suica or PASMO card?

Yes, on JR, Keikyu, Tokyu and the Minatomirai Line. Tap in at the first gate and out at the last; a Tokyu to Minatomirai Line ride needs no tap in between because the train runs through.
