Can You Use Suica in Hakone? Where It Works on the Train, Bus, Cable Car, Ropeway and Pirate Ship (2026)

Updated 2026-10-27

Your Suica opens the gate on two of the five legs of the Hakone loop: the Hakone Tozan Train and the Hakone Tozan Bus. At the Hakone Ropeway and the pirate ship it works only as money at the ticket window, where staff charge the fare to the card balance and hand you a paper ticket. On the Hakone Tozan Cable Car between Gora and Sounzan it does nothing at all, and that is the leg that catches people out. PASMO follows the same rules everywhere, and a Welcome Suica is a Suica. All of this is from the operators' own pages and FAQ, checked 2026-10-27.

The practical answer: tapping a card is fine for a half day (Shinjuku to Gora and back costs ¥3,442 by card), but for the full loop the 2-day Hakone Freepass is ¥1,222 cheaper than paying leg by leg, and it is the only thing that gets you through every gate without queuing.

Board of the six legs from Shinjuku round the Hakone loop, with what a Suica or PASMO can do on each and the adult one-way fare. Odakyu Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto: tap at the gate, 1,261 yen by IC card, Romancecar seat is a separate 1,200 yen ticket. Hakone Tozan Train Hakone-Yumoto to Gora: tap at the gate, 460 yen. Hakone Tozan Cable Car Gora to Sounzan: IC cards not accepted, 430 yen ticket. Hakone Ropeway Sounzan to Togendai: pay at the ticket window only, 2,000 yen. Hakone Sightseeing Cruise Togendai to Moto-Hakone: pay at the ticket counter, 1,700 yen. Hakone Tozan Bus Moto-Hakone to Hakone-Yumoto: tap on and off, 1,210 yen. A contactless credit card or phone can be tapped on all five Hakone legs since March 2026. Loop total 5,800 yen: 1,670 yen tapped, 3,700 yen paid at windows, 430 yen cable car ticket. Checked 2026-10-27.
The cable car is the one leg where the card is useless. A contactless credit card, oddly, is accepted on every leg of the loop.

Leg by leg: what your Suica can do

Leg Adult fare, one way Suica / PASMO Contactless credit card What to do
Odakyu Line, Shinjuku → Hakone-Yumoto ¥1,261 by card (¥1,270 paper) tap at the gate no A Romancecar seat is a separate ¥1,200 ticket; the card only pays the base fare
Hakone Tozan Train, Hakone-Yumoto → Gora ¥460 (Odawara → Yumoto ¥360) tap at the gate tap on the terminal Nothing to do: the gates read IC cards like any Tokyo station
Hakone Tozan Cable Car, Gora → Sounzan ¥430 not accepted tap on the terminal Buy a ticket at Gora (cash or credit card at the office), or tap a credit card
Hakone Ropeway, Sounzan → Togendai ¥2,000 ticket window only tap on the blue box Say "Suica" at the window; the fare comes off the balance and you get a paper ticket
Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (pirate ship), Togendai → Moto-Hakone ¥1,700 ticket counter tap on the blue box Same as the ropeway: pay with the card at the counter, board with the ticket
Hakone Tozan Bus, Moto-Hakone → Hakone-Yumoto ¥1,210 tap on and off tap on and off Touch the reader by the door when you board and again when you get off

Three details behind the table:

The loop in numbers: tap, window, or neither

The classic loop from Hakone-Yumoto (train to Gora, cable car to Sounzan, ropeway to Togendai, pirate ship to Moto-Hakone, bus back to Yumoto) costs ¥5,800 in adult single fares. Here is how that splits by what the card can do:

How you pay Legs Amount
Tap the card at a gate or bus reader Tozan Train ¥460 + Tozan Bus ¥1,210 ¥1,670
Pay with the card at a window and get a paper ticket Ropeway ¥2,000 + pirate ship ¥1,700 ¥3,700
The card does nothing Cable car ¥430 ¥430

So a Suica-only day works, but only ¥1,670 of the ¥5,800 is the tap-and-walk convenience people expect. The rest is queuing at two windows plus one ticket machine or credit-card tap at Gora. Keep at least ¥6,000 on the card before Sounzan if you want the window staff to charge everything to it. Add the Odakyu train from Shinjuku (¥1,261 each way) and a full card day comes to ¥8,322.

Suica or the Hakone Freepass?

The Hakone Freepass covers all eight Hakone operators (Tozan Train, cable car, ropeway, pirate ship, Tozan Bus, Odakyu Highway Bus and Tokai Bus in the designated areas, and the sightseeing bus) plus an Odakyu round trip from your starting station. It is not loaded onto a Suica: it is a paper ticket or a digital ticket in the EMot app, and the paper one is collected at your last station.

Day By card (IC fares) Freepass Verdict
Full loop from Shinjuku, back the same day ¥8,322 ¥7,100 (2 days) Freepass, saves ¥1,222 and every queue
Full loop from Odawara (arriving by JR or Shinkansen) ¥6,520 ¥6,000 (2 days) Freepass, saves ¥520
Shinjuku → Gora and back (Open-Air Museum, Gora Park, an onsen, no ropeway or ship) ¥3,442 ¥7,100 Suica, saves ¥3,658
Shinjuku → Hakone-Yumoto only (onsen day) ¥2,522 ¥7,100 Suica, saves ¥4,578

The pattern is simple. If the ropeway and the ship are on your list, buy the pass. Those two legs are ¥3,700 of the loop, and they are the two where the card is slowest to use. If you stop at Gora or Yumoto, keep tapping. The one case the table hides: on a windy day the ropeway stops and is replaced by a bus, and a card-only visitor loses nothing, while the pass holder has paid for a ride that did not happen. Check the Hakone Freepass calculator with your own list of legs, and the is the Freepass worth it guide for the two-day versions.

Children travel differently again: the Freepass costs ¥1,600 for a child from Shinjuku against ¥7,100 for an adult, so a family almost always does better with passes for the children even when the adults tap.

A contactless credit card works in more places than a Suica

Since March 2026 the Hakone operators take contactless credit cards and phones on the Tozan Train, the cable car, the Tozan Bus, the pirate ship and the ropeway (Hakone Navi article of 25 March 2026). You tap on the dedicated terminal when boarding and alighting the train, cable car and bus, and on the blue box at the cruise piers and ropeway stations. The yellow boxes are for EMot QR tickets, not for cards.

That makes a contactless Visa or Mastercard the only thing in your wallet that gets through the Gora cable-car gate without a paper ticket. Two cautions: tap the same card on and off, and keep in mind that a credit-card tap is an adult fare, so children still need a ticket or a pass.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use Suica on the Hakone Tozan Railway?

Yes. Tap in and out at the gates from Odawara to Gora, exactly as in Tokyo. Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto is ¥360 and Hakone-Yumoto to Gora is ¥460 for an adult. The cable car from Gora to Sounzan is run by the same company but does not take IC cards.

Does the Hakone bus take Suica?

Yes, on every Hakone Tozan Bus route and vehicle except the scheduled sightseeing buses, and on Izuhakone Bus. Touch the reader when you board and again when you get off; Moto-Hakone to Hakone-Yumoto is ¥1,210. The driver can top up your card while the bus is stopped.

Is Suica accepted on the Hakone Ropeway?

Only at the ticket window, where the fare (¥2,000 one way for an adult) is charged to the card balance and you receive a paper ticket. There is no IC reader at the platform. A contactless credit card can be tapped on the blue box instead.

Can I pay for the Hakone pirate ship with Suica?

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise accepts PASMO and Suica at the ticket counter, together with the major credit cards. You pay for the ¥1,700 ticket with the card and board with the ticket; you cannot tap at the pier.

Why does the Hakone cable car refuse Suica?

No. The Hakone Tozan Cable Car between Gora and Sounzan does not take IC cards. Buy the ¥430 ticket at Gora, show a Hakone Freepass, or tap a contactless credit card on the terminal.

Can the Hakone Freepass be loaded onto a Suica?

No. The Freepass is sold as a paper ticket (Odakyu station machines, 7-Eleven, Hakone-Yumoto and Gora machines, the Odawara service centre) or as a digital ticket in the EMot app. The paper pass is collected at your last station.

Is a Welcome Suica accepted in Hakone?

Yes, in the same places as any Suica: the gates of the Odakyu Line and the Tozan Train, the readers on the Tozan Bus, and the ticket windows of the ropeway and the cruise. It is refused at the cable-car gate like every other IC card.

Suica or Hakone Free Pass for one day?

Full loop: the Freepass (¥7,100 from Shinjuku against ¥8,322 by card). Gora or Yumoto and back without the ropeway and ship: the card (¥3,442 or ¥2,522 against ¥7,100).
