Hakone Komagatake Ropeway Tickets: ¥2,200 Return, 10% Off with the Freepass, Hours and the Boat from Moto-Hakone (2026)

Updated 2026-10-14

Hakone has two ropeways, and the Freepass pays for only one of them. The Komagatake Ropeway at Hakone-en, on the east shore of Lake Ashi, costs ¥2,200 return for adults and ¥1,100 for elementary school children. A Hakone Freepass takes 10% off, so ¥1,980 and ¥990. Cars leave every 20 minutes at :00, :20 and :40, first up 9:00, last up 16:30, last down 16:50, and the ride is 7 minutes over about 1,800 m of cable. The catch is getting to Hakone-en: the Lake Ashi boat from Moto-Hakone (¥1,200, 15 min) and the Izuhakone bus from Odawara both refuse the Freepass. Fares and hours are from Prince Hotels, Hakone Navi, Hakone Yusen and Odakyu Highway Bus, checked 2026-10-14.

Diagram of four ways to Hakone-en, the lower station of the Komagatake Ropeway: Lake Ashi Sightseeing Boat from Moto-Hakone-ko 15 minutes 1,200 yen, Freepass not valid; on foot from Moto-Hakone about 30 minutes; Izuhakone Bus J from Odawara Station about 80 minutes, Freepass not valid; Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus from Busta Shinjuku about 2 hours 25 minutes 2,700 yen. Ropeway profile: about 1,800 m, 7 minutes, every 20 minutes, first up 9:00, last up 16:30, last down 16:50, then 8 minutes on foot to Hakone Motomiya. Fares: adult return 2,200 yen, child 1,100 yen, with the Hakone Freepass 1,980 and 990 yen, one way 1,300 and 650 yen. Checked 2026-10-14.
The pirate ship gets a Freepass holder as far as Moto-Hakone-ko. The last stretch to Hakone-en is a walk or a paid boat.

Getting to Hakone-en: where the Freepass stops

Hakone-en is run by Prince Hotels (Seibu group), and the transport on this side of the lake belongs to the Izuhakone group. The Odakyu Hakone Freepass covers none of it. Five ways in:

From How Time Adult fare
Moto-Hakone-ko Lake Ashi Sightseeing Boat (Hakone Yusen) to Hakone-en pier 15 min ¥1,200 one way, child ¥600. Freepass not valid
Moto-Hakone / Hakone Shrine on foot along the lake road about 30 min free
Odawara Station east exit Izuhakone Bus J via Hakone-Yumoto, Owakudani and Kojiri about 80 min (about 65 min from Hakone-Yumoto) IC card or cash. Freepass not valid; Izuhakone's own Hakone Bus Free (¥3,500 a day) covers it
Busta Shinjuku Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus, get off at Hakone-en about 2 h 25 min by Hakone-en's estimate, up to 2 h 40 min on the current timetable ¥2,700 one way, child ¥1,350
Kojiri (near Togendai) Lake Ashi Sightseeing Boat 15 min ¥1,200, but only a few sailings a day from Kojiri

With a Freepass, do it this way. Ride the pirate ship from Togendai to Moto-Hakone-ko, which the pass covers. From the pier, either walk the lake road for about 30 minutes (Hakone Shrine's own figure; it also says 7 minutes by car) or pay ¥1,200 for the Hakone Yusen boat, 15 minutes to the Hakone-en pier. Come back the same way. The boat's timetable for 13 July to 13 November 2026: first from Moto-Hakone 9:30, last 16:00 (16:40 on some dates); from Hakone-en first 9:45, last 16:15 (16:55 on some dates). Winter sailings are fewer, and the operator's timetable page has the exact dates.

What the day costs on top of the Freepass:

Plan Extra cost per adult
Walk both ways, ropeway return with the discount ¥1,980
Boat one way, walk the other ¥3,180
Boat both ways ¥4,380

Compare that with the Owakudani ropeway, which the pass covers in full. If you are counting yen, this detour is the single most expensive add-on on the loop. The Freepass calculator will tell you whether the pass still pays off once you drop something to make time for it.

Without a Freepass, the Izuhakone bus from Odawara is the direct option, and Izuhakone's 1-day Bus Free pays off if you also ride its Z line along the south shore. The highway bus from Shinjuku is the no-change option: one seat from Busta Shinjuku to the Hakone-en stop. Booking and the stops are in our Shinjuku to Hakone highway bus guide.

Our take: with a Freepass, you already have one ropeway in the price. Pay for this one if Hakone Motomiya matters to you, if you are staying at Hakone-en or The Prince, or if you come by car or the Shinjuku bus and this side of the lake is your base. Skip it if your single day is the standard Yumoto–Gora–Owakudani–Togendai–Moto-Hakone loop: the 30-minute walk each way, or ¥2,400 in boat fares, is what the detour really costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking at Hakone-en?

Yes. Hakone-en's access page lists ¥1,000 per car on weekdays and ¥1,200 on weekends and holidays, with a flat ¥1,200 during summer peak dates. Large buses park free.

Can I take a dog on the Lake Ashi boat to Hakone-en?

Hakone Yusen takes small and medium dogs under 30 kg for ¥300, on the same section as the owner. The ropeway page does not list a rule for dogs, so ask at the Hakone-en counter before you buy.

Is there a day pass for the Lake Ashi Sightseeing Boat?

Yes, ¥2,900 for adults and ¥1,450 for children, with boarding and alighting allowed at all four piers. The 40-minute round cruise is ¥2,400 but you cannot get off along the way, so it does not work as transport to Hakone-en.
