Haneda Airport to Hakone: The Direct Bus Now Ends at Gotemba, So Take the Train (Fares, Times, 2026)

Updated 2026-10-29

The bus that used to carry people from Haneda Airport into Hakone no longer does. Since 1 April 2026, every bus on the Odakyu Highway Bus and Keikyu Bus "Haneda · Yokohama – Gotemba · Hakone" line starts and ends at Gotemba Station, outside the Hakone mountains, and the stretch on to Sengokuhara and Togendai is suspended. Two buses a day leave Haneda, at 14:00 and 18:00, for ¥2,800. So the practical answer in 2026 is the train: Keikyu to Shinagawa and the Shinkansen to Odawara, about 45 minutes of riding plus two changes, or Keikyu to Yokohama and the JR Tokaido Line, slower and cheaper. Both finish on the ¥360 Hakone Tozan Train to Hakone-Yumoto. Fares and minutes below come from Odakyu Highway Bus, JR Central, Odakyu, Hakone Navi, Tokyo Monorail and Haneda Airport's own access page, checked 2026-10-29.

Route map from Haneda Airport to Hakone. Keikyu to Shinagawa, about 15 minutes, fare at the gate, then the Tokaido Shinkansen to Odawara, Hikari or Kodama only, 28 to 31 minutes, 3,100 yen, child 1,550 yen. Keikyu to Yokohama, about 30 minutes, 400 yen, child IC fare 75 yen, then the JR Tokaido Line to Odawara, about 60 minutes, fare at the gate. Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto on the Hakone Tozan Train, about 15 minutes, 360 yen, child 180 yen. Highway bus via Yokohama YCAT, two a day, 2,800 yen, child 1,400 yen, ends at Gotemba Station; the dashed line on to Togendai has had no service since 1 April 2026.
Crimson is Keikyu, navy is JR, red is the Hakone Tozan Train. The yellow bus line stops at Gotemba; the grey dashes beyond it are the suspended section.

Which way from Haneda?

Route Changes Riding time One-way adult fare
Keikyu → Shinagawa → Shinkansen → Odawara → Tozan Train 2 (Shinagawa, Odawara) about 15 + 28–31 + 15 min, call it an hour ¥3,460 plus the Keikyu fare to Shinagawa
Keikyu → Yokohama → JR Tokaido Line → Odawara → Tozan Train 2 (Yokohama, Odawara) about 30 + 60 + 15 min ¥760 plus the JR fare from Yokohama
Tokyo Monorail → Hamamatsucho → JR to Shinagawa → Shinkansen → Odawara → Tozan Train 3 13 min to Hamamatsucho, then as above ¥360 for pass holders: the Japan Rail Pass covers the monorail, the Yamanote Line and the Shinkansen
Highway bus → Gotemba Station → Odakyu bus to Togendai 1 (Gotemba) 1 h 52 to 2 h 07 to Gotemba, then about 30 min ¥2,800 + ¥1,080 = ¥3,880

The minutes are the operators' own: Haneda Airport's access page gives about 15 minutes to Shinagawa and about 30 to Yokohama; Hakone Navi's access chart gives about 60 minutes on the JR Tokaido Line from Yokohama and about 15 on the Tozan Train; JR Central's timetable gives 28 to 31 minutes from Shinagawa to Odawara. Add ten minutes for each change and a wait, and the Shinkansen route puts you in Hakone-Yumoto about an hour and three quarters after you tap into Keikyu, the Yokohama route about two and a quarter hours.

My pick after a flight is the Shinkansen. You pay roughly ¥2,000 more than the Yokohama route for an hour of your day, and the two changes are both inside big, signed stations. The Yokohama route is for anyone whose hotel is in Yokohama anyway, or who is counting yen. The bus is a special case, which I come to below.

What each leg costs

Per person to Hakone-Yumoto, then: the Shinkansen route is ¥3,460 plus the Keikyu fare for an adult and ¥1,805 plus the Keikyu fare for a child (¥75 + ¥1,550 + ¥180); the Yokohama route is ¥760 plus the JR fare for an adult and ¥255 plus the JR fare for a child.

The Haneda–Hakone highway bus in 2026

For years the easy answer to this question was the direct bus, run jointly by Odakyu Highway Bus and Keihin Kyuko Bus, from the three Haneda terminals through Yokohama to Gotemba and on into Hakone at Sengokuhara and Togendai on Lake Ashi. Odakyu Highway Bus's own page for the line now carries a notice dated 1 April 2026: the timetable was revised, all buses start and end at Gotemba, and the Gotemba to Togendai section is suspended. The 2026.4.1 timetable confirms it. The Hakone stops are still printed, with no times against them.

Departure board of the Haneda to Gotemba highway bus, timetable dated 1 April 2026. Towards Gotemba, buses 201 and 203: Haneda Terminal 3 at 14:00 and 18:00, Terminal 2 at 14:10 and 18:10, Terminal 1 at 14:15 and 18:15, Yokohama YCAT at 14:45 and 18:45, Tomei Ashigara 15:55 and 19:55, Gotemba Inter 16:03 and 20:03, Gotemba Station 16:07 and 20:07. Towards Haneda, buses 202 and 204: Gotemba Inter 08:35 and 11:05, Gotemba Station 08:40 and 11:10, Tomei Ashigara 08:48 and 11:18, Yokohama YCAT 10:15 and 12:45, Haneda Terminal 1 10:42 and 13:12, Terminal 2 10:47 and 13:17, Terminal 3 10:57 and 13:27. Hakone Sengoku Information Center, Sengoku Kogen and Togendai: no service. Fare Haneda to Gotemba 2,800 yen, child 1,400 yen; Yokohama to Gotemba 2,300 yen, child 1,150 yen. Book by 17:00 the day before.
Two buses each way, and both from Haneda reach Gotemba after four in the afternoon. The crossed-out rows are the Hakone stops the line no longer serves.

What that means in practice:

The bus is still the right tool for one traveller: someone landing before noon, staying around Sengokuhara, Togendai or the Gotemba outlets, with luggage they do not want to carry through two station changes. Everyone else takes the train.

Changing at Odawara

Odawara Station has three railways in one building, and Hakone Navi's station guide lays them out. The Shinkansen gate is at the West Exit on the first floor; the JR Tokaido Line gate is on the third floor; Odakyu and the Hakone Tozan Train share one gate, with the trains to Hakone-Yumoto leaving from platforms 7 and 11. The Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center next to that gate, open 8:30 to 18:00, sells the Hakone Freepass. Arriving by Shinkansen you walk from the West Exit gate to the Odakyu gate and tap in again; arriving by JR local train you come down from the third floor. At Hakone-Yumoto the red Tozan trains up to Gora leave from platform 3. Transport IC cards work on the Tozan Train but not on the cable car above Gora, a detail the Suica in Hakone guide goes into.

If you hold a Japan Rail Pass

The pass changes the first leg. Japan Rail Pass's own page on validity says holders "can also use the Tokyo Monorail", and that private railways must be paid for separately, which rules Keikyu out. So the covered route is the monorail to Hamamatsucho (13 minutes), the Yamanote Line two stops to Shinagawa, and a Hikari or Kodama to Odawara. The pass is not valid on Nozomi trains at all, and Nozomi does not stop at Odawara anyway. From Odawara the pass does nothing: the Tozan Train is ¥360, or you buy the Odawara version of the Hakone Freepass, ¥6,000 for two days or ¥6,400 for three (child ¥1,500 and ¥1,750), which covers the Tozan Train and the whole Hakone loop. Hakone Navi lists it at the Odakyu machines and the Sightseeing Service Center at Odawara. There is no Haneda version of the Freepass. Whether the pass beats single tickets for your plan is what the Hakone Freepass calculator is for, and the break-even guide shows where the line falls.

Luggage

Suitcases are the real argument against the train from the airport, and the usual fix is to send them. The Hakone luggage guide covers the Hakone Carry service from Hakone-Yumoto to hotels and the coin lockers at Odawara. On the highway bus the trunk is a luggage space you load yourself, and the company's terms allow nothing bigger than about one metre long.

Going back to Haneda

The two return buses leave Gotemba Inter at 08:35 and 11:05 (Gotemba Station 08:40 and 11:10) and reach Terminal 3 at 10:57 and 13:27, so they suit an afternoon flight after a night near Gotemba or the outlets, not a morning in Hakone proper. By train the route is the same in reverse: Tozan Train to Odawara, Kodama or Hikari to Shinagawa, Keikyu to the airport. Odawara's Shinkansen gate is on the opposite side of the station from the Odakyu gate, so allow a quarter of an hour there.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct bus from Haneda Airport to Hakone-Yumoto?

No, and there never was one to Hakone-Yumoto: the Haneda line ran to Sengokuhara and Togendai, on the Lake Ashi side. Since 1 April 2026 it ends at Gotemba Station. Hakone-Yumoto is reached by train through Odawara.

How long does it take from Haneda to Hakone?

About an hour of riding by the Shinkansen route (Keikyu about 15 minutes, Shinkansen 28 to 31, Tozan Train about 15), which comes to roughly an hour and three quarters with two changes. The Yokohama route is about two and a quarter hours. The bus takes 1 hour 52 minutes to 2 hours 07 to Gotemba, then another bus of about 30 minutes to Togendai.

Can I use the Japan Rail Pass from Haneda Airport?

Yes, on the Tokyo Monorail, the Yamanote Line and a Hikari or Kodama Shinkansen to Odawara. Not on Keikyu, the highway bus, the Hakone Tozan Train or anything else inside Hakone.

Does the Shinkansen stop at Odawara?

Kodama trains all stop there and some Hikari trains do. Nozomi trains do not. At Shinagawa, look for a Kodama with an Odawara time in its column; the ride is 28 to 31 minutes.

Can I pay with a Suica or PASMO card all the way?

On the train routes, yes: Keikyu, the Tokyo Monorail, JR local trains and the Hakone Tozan Train all take the national IC cards, and the Shinkansen ticket is bought at a machine or online. The highway bus is a reserved-seat ticket, booked ahead, not a tap.
