Hakone with Kids: What a Family Day Trip from Tokyo Costs (2026)
Two adults and two children aged 6–11 ride the whole Hakone loop from Shinjuku for ¥17,400 with the Hakone Freepass (¥7,100 per adult, ¥1,600 per child) on regular trains. Add the Romancecar one way and the family pays ¥21,000; both ways, ¥24,600. Children under 6 ride everything free. Fares are from the official Odakyu and Hakone Navi pages, checked 2026-11-01.
Kei's call for families
- Buy the child pass even if your kids will skip half the rides. A child's single tickets for the ropeway and the cruise alone come to ¥1,550. The child pass is ¥1,600 and also covers the trains, the cable car and the buses.
- Book the Open-Air Museum online. Same-day tickets cost the family ¥5,600; online tickets cost ¥4,800. Preschoolers are free either way.
- Pick the Open-Air Museum or Yunessun, not both. The loop itself fills a day trip. The museum sits on the Tozan Train line (Chokoku-no-Mori Station), so it costs you no extra travel. Yunessun is a bus detour and needs swimsuits and a few hours.
Put your own family into the Hakone Freepass calculator to check a different mix of adults and children.
Child fares for every ride
"Child" on Odakyu and in Hakone means ages 6–11. Adults are 12 and over.
| Ride or ticket | Adult | Child (6–11) | Under 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hakone Freepass, 2 days, from Shinjuku | ¥7,100 | ¥1,600 | no ticket |
| Hakone Freepass, 2 days, from Odawara | ¥6,000 | ¥1,500 | no ticket |
| Romancecar seat, Shinjuku ⇄ Hakone-Yumoto, each way (on top of the pass) | ¥1,200 | ¥600 | free on a lap; a seat needs a child ticket |
| Odakyu regular train, Shinjuku → Odawara | ¥910 | ¥460 (¥50 with a child IC card) | free |
| Hakone Tozan Train, Odawara → Hakone-Yumoto | ¥360 | ¥180 | free |
| Hakone Tozan Train + Cable Car, Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Sounzan | ¥890 | ¥450 | free |
| Hakone Ropeway, Sounzan → Togendai (one way) | ¥2,000 | ¥700 | free |
| Sightseeing cruise, Togendai → Moto-Hakone (one way) | ¥1,700 | ¥850 | free |
| Hakone Tozan Bus, Moto-Hakone → Hakone-Yumoto | ¥1,210 | child fare, paid on board | free |
How Odakyu sets child fares: half the adult fare, and paper tickets are rounded up to ¥10 (¥910 → ¥455 → ¥460). The surprise is the IC card: a child's PASMO or Suica is charged a flat ¥50 per ride anywhere on the Odakyu Line, so Shinjuku to Odawara costs a child ¥50 instead of ¥460. The Tozan Train, ropeway and cruise are separate companies and charge their own child fares.
Who rides free
Odakyu's official age bands, which the Hakone Freepass follows:
- Under 1: free.
- Ages 1–5: free, up to two with each paying adult or child. A third infant pays the child fare.
- Ages 6–11: child fare. A 6-year-old who has not started elementary school still counts as an infant.
- Romancecar: an infant on your lap is free. An infant in their own seat needs a child fare ticket and a child express ticket (¥640 + ¥600 from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto).
So a family with two children under 6 pays for the adults only: ¥14,200 for two Freepasses from Shinjuku, or ¥19,000 with Romancecar seats both ways.
A family of 4, worked out
Two adults and two children aged 6–11, Shinjuku to Hakone and back, riding the full loop (Tozan Train, cable car, ropeway, cruise, bus).
| Ticket choice | Adults | Children | Family total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freepass, regular Odakyu trains | ¥14,200 | ¥3,200 | ¥17,400 |
| Freepass + Romancecar one way | ¥16,600 | ¥4,400 | ¥21,000 |
| Freepass + Romancecar both ways | ¥19,000 | ¥5,600 | ¥24,600 |
| Single tickets, regular trains | ¥16,680 | ¥6,560 + bus | ¥23,240 + the children's bus fares |
Single tickets lose by at least ¥5,840 before the children's bus ride back. For the adults alone the gap is ¥1,240 each (¥8,340 against ¥7,100). For a child it is wider in proportion: ¥3,280 in singles before the bus, against ¥1,600.
Starting from Odawara
Coming by Shinkansen or staying near Odawara? The 2-day Freepass from Odawara is ¥6,000 per adult and ¥1,500 per child, so the same family pays ¥15,000 for everything inside Hakone. With child IC cards, the Shinjuku version (¥1,600) and the Odawara version plus two ¥50 rides (¥1,600) cost a child exactly the same. For adults the Shinjuku pass saves ¥720 against the Odawara pass plus two ¥910 tickets.
Entry tickets children pay
| Place | Adult | Child | Younger children |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hakone Open-Air Museum, same day | ¥2,000 | ¥800 (elementary and junior high) | preschool free |
| Hakone Open-Air Museum, online | ¥1,800 | ¥600 | preschool free |
| Hakone Gora Park | ¥650 (free with the Freepass) | free (elementary and younger) | free |
| Yunessun (swimsuit hot spring), A-price day | ¥2,500 | ¥1,400 (age 3 to elementary) | under 3 free |
| Yunessun Passport (Yunessun + Mori no Yu), A-price day | ¥3,500 | ¥1,800 | under 3 free |
The Open-Air Museum's Woods of Net is for children aged 12 and under only, shoes off, and adults stay off the white mat. Strollers are free to use at the Main Gallery and New Gallery desks. Gora Park has steep slopes and stairs, and strollers cannot be used inside. Yunessun's price day (A, B or C) depends on the date; the Yunessun tickets calculator shows which one applies.

Timing that matters with children
- The ropeway runs 9:00–17:00 from February to November and 9:00–16:15 in December and January. The cruise and the ropeway stop early, so do the loop in the morning and leave the museum for the way back.
- The Open-Air Museum opens every day 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30.
- From 7 to 24 December 2026 the ropeway between Owakudani and Sounzan is closed for inspection, with a replacement bus (about 10 minutes). Black eggs and the steam at Owakudani are still reachable.
- The last Tozan Bus from Moto-Hakone to Hakone-Yumoto and Odawara leaves at 20:03.
